"My Mommy & Daddy Refinanced Their Mortgage At World Wide Financial. Again." Miles Neumann the Jewish Community Center of Washtenaw County, described how Jews and blacks have worked together in Washtenaw County to plan and observe a black-Jewish seder. Learning to recognize • • ) significant issues for blacks and for Jews helps the others understand, he said. "There • are two general ways coali- • tions go. They talk about the issues and they engage joint- ly in projects." Friendships have developed from a July 4 picnic, working ' to rehabilitate public housing \„ in Ypsilanti and annual • black-Jewish seders. "We found, where I live, /- that if you work together then ) you must talk, because there are so many misconceptions," Mr. Gordon said. "It's in both communities?' In revealing discussions be- • ween blacks and Jews, Mr. Gordon said, "the blacks kept referring to the Jews as whites. The Jews were astonished! They never thought of themselves as white; they thought of them- selves as Jews, and there's a distinction to them." In another afternoon dialogue, two Jewish authors, Lev Raphael of Michigan State University and Harry Brod from Kenyon College, discussed whether gays and • heterosexuals can be allies. Mr. Raphael said Jews often feel like outsiders, but Jews who also are gay, lesbian or bisexual feel doubly like out- siders. "I think we are expected to be invisible and silent," he said. Both said they are children of Holocaust survivors, but Mr. Raphael said homosexual children of Holocaust sur- vivors in the lesbian and gay synagogues he visits often ask him where others are. "Lesbian and gay children of survivors," he said, "are constantly felt unwelcome." Mr. Brod said he works in the pro-feminist/men's move- ment, but "Jewish men face > issues caught by their own parts of the culture. One way \- we try is to dominate our women and be physically ag- gressive." The conference also featured: • Jerome Segal, founder of the Jewish Peace Lobby, who discussed the "Middle East /-' Peace Process and American Policy." • Two short films, Chicken Soup and Gefilte Fish, \, highlighting the foods we eat. > • "This Is the Moment: Israelis and Palestinians Talking Peace," a 30-minute videotape produced by the Boston NJA. ❑ WORLD WIDE FINANCIAL THE BEST MORTGAGE RATES.
