Lyle Alzado,
Football Star

Los Angeles (JTA) — Lyle
Alzado, the former fearsome
defensive end for the Los
Angeles Raiders and one of
the few Jewish standouts in
pro football, died May 14 in
Lake Oswego, Ore. He was
43.
Mr. Alzado's death was at-
tributed to a rare form of
cancer, a primary brain
lymphoma, which he blamed
on his heavy use of steroids
during his 15-year career.
Mr. Alzado told an inter-
viewer some years ago that
his mother and her parents,
who immigrated from
Russia, were Orthodox Jews,
and that "I follow it, but I
don't study enough." For a
time, he was active in the
Jews for Judaism anti-cult
movement.
Standing 6-foot-3 and
weighing 265 pounds at the
top of his form, Mr. Alzado
had lost 100 pounds by the
time of his death.
His fierce style of playing
seemed to epitomize the
Raiders' philosophy, and he
was fond of saying that "If
me and King Kong went into
an alley, only one of us
would come out, and it
wouldn't be the monkey."

During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will
observe the yahrtzeits of the following departed
friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recita-
tion of kaddish and studying of mishnayos.
