"Sometimes you have to watch out more for friends than strangers because you think they won't get you back," Platt said with a smile. Larry Brown, who has been playing on the same line with Platt and Oak Park resident Jack Schwartz, a periodon- tist, almost since the first days of the YHL, remembers an incident that happened about eight years ago which demonstrated the com- petitiveness but also the fellowship of the league. "I guess I shoved a guy in- to the boards and I tore his jersey," said Brown, 33, a podiatrist who lives in South- field. "He put his stick into my gut and before you knew it, guys were fighting. "What's amazing is we had just formed the teams about 10 minutes earlier and guys were sticking up for their teammates. It was a night I'll never forget." Calm was restored shortly after the tussle began, and now the incident brings smiles to those who were involved. Brown's nickname, by the way, is Reed. Rosenberg dubbed him that several years ago, saying Brown's play on the ice reminded him of then-Detroit Red Wings defenseman Reed Larson. Larson has retired. Brown is still playing. So how much longer will there be a YHL? How much longer will these guys be able to absorb the checks, the shots off the ankles, the shoves into the boards and the few less h6urs of sleep each week? "I'd say we'll play as long as we're here and we stay healthy," Rosenberg pre- dicted. "I can see us playing into our 40s," Brown added. "Hey, then you'd have yourself quite a story." It's already a good one, Larry. 0 Karate Team Tryouts Set Philadelphia — U.S. Mac- cabiah Karate Team Tryouts will be held Nov. 6-8 at the North Shore Martial Arts Academy, 1779 Winnetka Rd., Northfield, Ill.
