JCCouncil's Annual Meeting
Will Feature A Town Forum

The relationship between
Detroit and its suburbs will
be the focus of the Jewish
Community Council's annual
meeting 7:30 p.m. May 26 at
Temple Israel.
Panelists for the program,
which is being presented in
cooperation with the Race

Relations Council of Metro-
politan Detroit, are Edward
Hustoles, deputy executive
director of planning for SEM-
COG; Rabbi M. Robert Syme
of Temple Israel, and Blenda
Wilson, chancellor of the
University of Michigan/Dear-
born and member of the Race

Will Hear Dr. Fisher

Dr. Eugene J. Fisher,
associate director of Catholic-
Jewish Relations for the
Secretariat for Ecumenical
and Interreligious Affairs of
the National Conference of
Catholic Bishops, will be the
speaker at an American
Jewish Committee tribute
reception honoring Saul and
Marjorie Saulson 7 p.m. May
17 at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Dr. Fisher, a native
Detroiter, has directed inter-
religious affairs since 1977.
Dr. Fisher was director of
Catechist Formation for the
Archdiocese of Detroit, as
well as adjunct professor of
Sacred Scripture at St. John's
Seminary in Plymouth, Mich-
igan, and for the Religious
Studies Department of the
University of Detroit.
Dr. Fisher was appointed
consultant to the Vatican
Commission for Religious
Relations with the Jews. He
is one of eight consultors
worldwide and the only
American on the Commis-
sion. In 1985 he was ap-
pointed a member of the In-
ternational Catholic-Jewish
Liaison Committee by the
Holy See.

sent the American Jewish
Committee's Cyrus Adler Dis-
tinguished Community Ser-
vice Award to the Saulsons at
a dessert reception preceding
Dr. Fisher's presentation.
There is a charge. Proceeds
will benefit the Institute of
Human Relations, the
American Jewish Committee.

Synagogues Join
Days Of Decision

Synagogue, temple and
community members will
become Allied Jewish Cam-
paign volunteers for the May
31-June 5 Days of Decision.
Fourteen congregations
have agreed to sponsor
phonathons on behalf of the
Campaign, and agencies of
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit are
assisting.
Funds raised by the Cam-
paign will help Jews locally,
nationally and overseas.
Following the Days of Deci-
sion, Federation's budgeting
and planning divisions will
allocate Campaign dollars.

Relations Council. Moderator
will be WTVS talk show host
Brent Triest.
The format of the evening
will be a "town meeting"
where, instead of speeches by
the panelists, audience
members will be encouraged
to express their views and to
ask questions of the panelists.
In addition to the forum,
the Council will hold its an-
nual election of officers and
board members, and will pre-
sent the Walter E. Klein
Youth Award for outstanding
social action programming.
Mr. Hustoles moved into his
current position as deputy ex-
ecutive director of SEMCOG

To date, the Campaign has
raised $23.3 million, a
$525,000 increase over last
year from the same
contributors.
To make pledge payment
easier, contributors have the
option of using their Visa or
MasterCard credit cards.
Robert H. Naftaly and Paul
D. Borman are chairmen of
the Days of Decision.

tional phonathon, individuals

Tom Turner, secretary-
treasurer of the Michigan
State AFL-CIO, will be
honored by the Detroit
Zionist Federation at its Yom
Yerushalayim (Jerusalem
Day) family celebration 2 p.m.
May 31 in the United Hebrew
Schools auditorium.
Mr. Turner has participated
in many activities in support
of Israel. As vice president of
the A. Phillip Randolph In-
stitute, he played a role in the
Labor Zionist-Alliance/A.
Phillip Randolph Institute
Coalition which sought to im-
prove black-Jewish relation-
ships through support of
Israel, full employment
legislation and voter registra-
tion. He works on behalf of
the Afro-Asian Institute in
Israel and has assisted many
of the nistadrut committees
promoting labor's involve-
ment in activities on behalf of
Israel.
Sandra Ben-Dor, enter-
tainer in Israel, Europe and
the USA, will sing Hebrew,
English, Russian and Ladino
songs. The program will in-
clude youth participation and
will highlight the Gates of
Jerusalem. Students of area
religious schools will exhibit
essays, poetry and drawings
representing the Gates.
The program is co-
sponsored by the Jewish Com-
munity Council, the Israel
Desk of the Jewish Federa-
tion of Metropolitan Detroit
in partnership with the Israel
Independence Day Commit-
tee and the American Zionist
Federation. There is no
charge. Persons who attend
are encouraged to bring an
Israeli food product which
will be contributed to Yad
Ezra.

Brent Triest was the co-
executive producer and host
of the community forum pro-
gram "SpeakOut!" on WTVS.
He is senior producer and
host for WTVS City for Youth

'95 television town hall
meetings.

State Of Israel Bonds
Honors The Archers

Dennis W. Archer and
Judge Trudy D. Archer will
be honored by the Metro-
politan Detroit Attorneys
Division of Israel Bonds 6
p.m. June 2 at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
The Archers will each be
presented with the "State of
Israel Eleanor Roosevelt
Humanities Award" for their
contributions to the legal pro-
fession. Serving as dinner
chairmen for the event are at-
torneys George Bushnell Jr.,
Alan May and Macomb Coun-
ty Prosecuting Attorney Carl
Marlinga. Honorary dinner
chairmen are Michigan At-
torney General Frank Kelley,
U.S. Senator Carl Levin and
U.S. Senator Donald Riegle
Jr.
In 1985, after 15 years as a
trial lawyer, Dennis Archer
was appointed to the Michi-
gan Supreme Court by Gover-
nor James Blanchard-. The
following year he was elected
to continue in that capacity
for an eight-year term by
popular vote. At the time, Mr.
Archer was the first black to
sit on the Supreme Court in
nearly 20 years and only the
second in Michigan's history.
Judge Trudy Archer has
been a member of the bench
at the 36th District Court in
Detroit since 1989. Her
previous experienCe includes
two years as assistant dean at
the Detroit College of Law.
Judge Archer's professional
affiliations include the

State Bar of Michigan,
Wolverine Bar Association,
Association of Black Judges
of Michigan, and Women
Lawyers Association of
Michigan.
She serves on the boards of
trustees of the Founders

phony Orchestra Hall; the
board of directors of Boys and
Girls Club of Southeastern
Michigan, and is the vice
president of the Greening of
Detroit. Judge Archer is also
a life member of the NAACP
and is a member of the
Detroit chapters of Girls
Friends, Inc. and Links, Inc.
