Let this serve as a message
to audiences like those on
the MSU campus that Mr.
Farrakhan and his followers
will never be accepted
honorably by fellow Ameri-
cans.
We now have a message of
encouragement from a story
released by the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency from Johan-
nesburg, South Africa, on
April 15. It brought the
heartening information that
"Mandela Thanks South
African Jews For Contribu-
tions To Black Struggle."
For a number of years, es-
pecially in his addresses to
audiences in his visits to this
country, Mr. Mandela served
as an advocate of anti-
Israelism. He acted like an
enemy of the Jewish people
and not of Zionism alone.
Now, as the JTA news
reveals:
He stressed that the
ANC recognized that
despite its small numbers
relative to the entire
population, the local Jew-
ish community has made
contributions "second to
non-e" to the de-
velopement of South
Africa.
He called for defeat of
those forces "fanatically
devoted to a discredited
past, who wish to destroy
all hope of a peaceful
future."
He concluded his mes-
sage by wishing South
African Jews "Shalom
aleichem. Peace be with
you all during Passover."
It is not African Jewry
alone but all of us who can
feel elated over a national
leader's change in what had
been unfriendly language.
We can feel heartened that
an unfriendly tone can
become a message of peace
and friendship. Indeed, let
us reach accord in human re-
lations.
Less Attention
To The Hateful
There are many ways of
judging the media and
analyzing their judgments of
Jews and Israel. We keep
appealing to our colleagues
in the press to give major at-
tention to much that is
creative and to stop giving
priority to remote incidents
that invite disrespect and
suspicion.
New York Times foreign
correspondent Clyde Hab-
erman provides the need for
such an appeal in one of his
recent reports. On May 1 the
Times published a Haber-
man story headlined "A Pa-
lestinian Who Is A Jew
Fights Israel." It was a story
about Rabbi Moshe Hirsch of
Jerusalem who heads the
movement that calls itself
Neturei Karta, which is
Hebrew for "Guardians of
the City." While Mr. Hab-
erman refers to them as " a
small sect of rigorously Or-
thodox Jews" he should have
indicated that they were
never counted as numbering
more than 300 to 400. He
does reveal that two of their
number from New York
were represented on the
Arab delegation as ac-
credited members to the
Arab-Israel conference in
Washington, thereby adding .
to the poison against Israel.
In a search for
background, it would have
been well for Mr. Haberman
to trace the hatemongering
of this group. Then he could
have exposed the handful as
not only being anti-Zionist
but as having appealed at
the very founding of the
State of Israel to King Hus-
sein of Jordan to come and
rescue them by destroying
Israel. That was their motto
while laboring under the
guise of waiting for the Mes-
siah since their founding 60
years ago.
While they are laughed at
as sick-minded because
there is nothing new in fin-
ding a Jew who hates
himself and other Jews, Mr.
Haberman now knows that
very little attention is paid
to them except when they
put paid ads in the Times
advocating the destruction
of Israel. Therefore,
headlines for all of them
should be "Jews Who Hate
Jews."
While the existence of
even a single deluded Jew
needs not be kept a secret,
his appearance in public
should be treated as such
while the creativity of Israel
should never be hidden from
public attention. ❑

Memorial Rites
Honor Valor
Budapest (JTA) — Non-
Jewish Hungarians who
helped save Jewish lives
when their country was
allied with Nazi Germany in
World War II were given
places of honor at the Holo-
caust memorial ceremony at
the Budapest City Hall last
week.
The Jewish community's
focus on their valiant acts of
a half-century ago was in-
tended to serve as an in-
direct warning against the
reversion to nationalism and
anti-Semitism that is being
witnessed today.
