Mezuzot need to be check- ed twice every seven years because through time, the ink on the parchment can sometimes erode. If one letter is chipped, torn or broken, the entire mezuzah needs to be replaced. A mezuzah consists of two Torah passages, the Shema and the Yehayah Im Shamoa, which are written on one piece of parchment. People can bring their mezuzot to the Jimmy Pren- tis Morris Jewish Commun- ity Center on Sunday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following week, the ser- vice will be offered at Young Israel of Southfield, also from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "There are certain laws that are attached to the writing of a mezuzah," said Rabbi Lange. "It's got to be written by hand or it's not kosher. "But there are other re- quirements as well," he con- tinued. "A mezuzah can be harmed by the elements, rain or the outdoors, and need help." ❑ Temple Sets Rights Program The Birmingham Temple will present Harry Cook, Detroit Free Press columnist; Howard Simon, director, ACLU; and Carol King, presi- dent of the Michigan Abor- tion Rights Action League, in a rally for personal freedom under the banner "Defending Human Rights; The Michigan Agenda" 8:30 p.m. May 18 at the temple.
