Don Shane

WXYZ's colorful sports-
caster and his best pal fit
each other to a T.
Not long after he arrived
in Detroit in the 1970s, Mr.
Shane met Dr. Ed Cohen —
appropriately enough — on
the golf course.
"He was putting around
, and I was putting around,"
Mr. Shane recalls. "And I
heard him talking to the golf
pro, saying he admired an
attractive woman out on the
practice tee. I had to tell
him, 'By the way, that's my
wife.' "
Mr. Shane says his friend
is a big sports fan and has a
great sense of humor. "He's
like the brother I never
had."
' The two men enjoy travel-
ing together and playing
sports; "we play a lot of
golf," Mr. Shane says.
Though he concedes Dr.
Cohen might disagree, Mr.
Shane insists there's little
r question as to who has more
skill when it comes to the
putting or dribbling on the
basketball court or following
in the footsteps of Hank
Greenberg.
"I'm the better athlete,"
: he says. "By far."

Jeff Rosenberg

Jeff, president of the Mich-
igan State Temple Youth
organization, has been best
buddies with Brian Frank
"since birth," he says.
Jeff's-mother, and Brian's
mother, were good friends.
Brian was born in March.
Jeff was born in June.
"The big joke is that he
knew me three months
longer than I knew him,"
Jeff says.

Jeff says he and Brian are
in many ways opposites.
"I'm austere; Brian is a
more hang-loose type per-
son," he says. "We're
definitely different. I think
that's part of what keeps the
friendship going so strong."
But both boys share a
commitment to Judaism.
They grew up together in
temple youth groups. This
year, Brian is serving as co-
ordinator of the Mitzvah
Corps, a week-long program
in which youth group mem-
bers work with inner city
children.
Brian and Jeff also share
similar values and a sense of
humor, Jeff says. "We like to
be silly together."

Jane Sherman with Edie Slotkin

Jane Sherman

Dr. Ed Cohen and Don Shane

Jane Sherman, a board
member of the Jewish Agen-
cy, is famous for her dedica-
tion to Israel. Her two best
friends share this quality.
"They're not childhood
friends and I don't exactly
remember where and when
we met," Mrs. Sherman says
of Larry Jackier and Edie
Slotkin. "But we're involved
in Jewish life and the State
of Israel."
Co-chairman of the 1991
and 1992 Allied Jewish
Campaigns, Mr. Jackier
shares "mutual friends and
goals and feelings about
Israel" with Mrs. Sherman.
"And I respect his judgment;
I would trust him with
anything."
Mrs. Sherman also labels
Mr. Jackier "a very, very
caring and very, very con-
siderate individual. He has a
fabulous sense of humor and
is an excellent golfer."
He's a good skier, too, she
says, "though it took 20
years to finally get him to
start skiing."

Mrs. Sherman's other best
pal, Edie Slotkin, is "my
crazy, nutty friend. I love
her. We've gone through a
lot of trauma together."

Mrs. Sherman says she
took an instant like to Ms.
Slotkin — "everybody does."

Like Mr: Jackier, Ms.
Slotkin understands her
friend's passion for Israel.
The two met there when Ms.
Slotkin made her first trip to
the country. She understood
immediately "just how crazy
I am about Israel," Mrs. Sher-
man says. ❑
