ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

W
hen Gloria Swanson
needed someone to
soothe her aches
and pains, she didn't call the
doctor. She didn't seek out a
masseuse. She didn't even
look up a psychotherapist.
Instead, the actress made
an appointment with Michel
Abehsera.
Mr. Abehsera is a world
authority on macrobiotics
and mystical philosophy.
The author of numerous
books, he holds private con-
sultations —with clients
=Tanging from observant
Jews to famous actors —
where he dispenses such
remedies as homeopathic
cures and Chinese medicine.
Mr. Abehsera will be in
Detroit this weekend, serv-
-ing as scholar-in-residence
for the Bais Chabad Torah
enter spring Shabbaton.
His topics include "The Jews
as Healer — Curing
Through Plants, Diet and
Speech" and "Body and Soul
— A Practical and Mystical
Union."
Mr. Abehsera became in-
terested in macrobiotics
after suffering as a youth
with numerous ailments, in-
cluding rheumatism and ar-
thritis.
He described macrobiotics
as a system of eating based
on yin and yang, opposing
but complementary forces
that are said to affect every-
thing in the world. The yin
represents the active; the
yang is passive.
Similarly, foods are either
yin or yang, Mr. Abehsera
said. Yin foods include fruit
and Coke, while meat and
cheese are yang.
Too much from either
group can result in • im-
balance and, therefore,
disease, Mr. Abehsera said.
Once he learned the proper
intake of yin and yang foods
through macrobiotics, "I saw
an immediate effect," he
said. "It cured me."
Mr. Abehsera believes
firmly in the power of non-
traditional remedies for
others, as well.
I
Michel Abehsera:
Yin and yang.
A man who insists he's
"allergic to doctors," Mr.
Abehsera said he has
dispensed homeopathic ad-
vice and prescribed
macrobiotic diets to his
clients, "and we have seen
wonders and wonders and
wonders."
Since learning about
macrobiotics in 1961, Mr.
Abehsera has written nu-
merous books, including
Cooking for Life and
Healing Ourselves, about
macrobiotics.
He said macrobiotics has
"much in common and
nothing in common" with
his other great passion,
Judaism. Both follow strict
laws "with no compromise,"
he said.
"But macrobiotics is just a
science and it doesn't change
a person morally," he said.
"Judaism is all about learn-
ing and growing and becom-
ing a good person."
A native of Morocco, Mr.
Abehsera lived for 15 years
in France where he "became
indoctrinated in French lit-
erature." He later settled in
Montreal.
Most recently, Mr.
Abehsera completed a 12-
year-project, The Possible
Man, a book he describes as
"a philosophical work
written with dance and a
touch of craziness." Its focus
is the "adventure in the
known."
His own favorite writers
are John Dos Passos, Kafka
and William Faulkner. ❑
