after the discovery that
brought him fame and
enormous wealth, people ask
Dr. Djerassi why he chose an
oral contraceptive for wo-
men and not for men.
"Women have a natural con-
traception pattern," he said.
"A woman can not get preg-
nant during the nine months
in which she is pregnant. A
woman does not ovulate dur-
ing pregnancy.
"So why not use a natural
hormone for birth control?"
he said during the inter-
view."It was a hint of nature
and there was no hint for
man.
"When women take oral
contraceptives," he added,
"they are in control of their
own fertility. If a man is on a
pill, he is in charge."
Dr. Djerassi has directed
four companies, including
Zoecon, one of the leaders in
developing environmentally
safe pesticides. He has au-
thored numerous scientific
articles and holds more than
100 scientific patents.
Among his honors, Dr.
Djerassi won the National
Medal of Science, the Na-
tional Medal of Technology
and the first Wolf Prize in
chemistry. In addition, he
was inducted into the Na-
tional Inventor's Hall of
Fame.
Last month, he was
awarded the highest honor
in American chemistry, the
Priestley Medal, given by
the American Chemical
Society. ❑
