Moe Brooker's abstract
h _paintings reverberate with
`vitality and color. As with all
his work, Mr. Brooker's new
paintings take their cue from
urban graffiti and jazz. An ad-
mirer of the great age of jazz,
Mr. Brooker infuses his pain-
• tings with rhythmic calli-
F—graphy, hot color and a sense
of structural form that is
reminiscent of the underlying
beat of good jazz.
Mr. Brooker grew up in
Philadelphia. A very specific
influence on his work is the
0-, urban wall, often plastered
with posters, public an-
' nouncements and graffiti. Mr.
Brooker is intent upon cap-
° turfing in his paintings the
changes that take place in
these layered walls over time
— the wearing away of posted
materials by weather and
vandalism and the addition of
new, unrelated printed mat-
►ter and graffiti which creates
a richly, rhythmic surface.
Glen Michaels is a Detroit-
area artist who- is known for
his sculptural assemblages
Oband major public commis-
sions. This exhibition,
however, will focus on
Michael's drawings. Some are
studies for sculpture; others
reflect the musings, the vi-
sion and the thoughts of an
artist who is a Renaissance
man. Michaels' interests and
knowledge are wide-ranging,
encompassing history, music
0 and science as well as art. His
vision and sensitivity of ap-
proach are clearly visible in
• this series of drawings. _
