Celebrates 100 Years

David celebrated its
centennial anniver-
sary with many festivities. A
cantorial concert, a Shabbat
dinner, a Shabbat service and
a dinner dance marked this
milestone.
The 100th year anniver-
sary dinner-dance was held
at the synagogue on May 3,
with more than 500 people
attending the event. Blan-
che Brant and Helen
Brown were the centennial
co-chairmen. Rabbi Morton
Yolkut, Cantor Stuart
Friedman, Tillie Brand-
wine, Alex Blumenberg,
Hershel Roth spoke, along
with guest speakers Maxine
Berman and Mark
Schlussel.

The centennial video was
memorable and poignant,
especially with scenes of the
late Cantor Hyman Adler,
who died in March. The
historical information was
well documented and in-
cluded photos of some of the
Russian immigrant families
who founded the synagogue
in 1892. Michael Traison
meticulously researched the
history and went to the 1915
synagogue site on Winder
Street. Interior photos of the
Elmhurst and Fourteenth
Street location displayed the
elegance of the synagogue,
which is well preserved.
Congregation B'nai David
embarks upon a new era.
Plans for a future home in
West Bloomfield by architects
Kenneth Newman and Joel
Smith were unveiled.

MCF EVENT
The prelude to Michigan
Cancer Foundation's 10th
annual dinner was held at

the home of David and
Doreen Hermelin, where
they welcomed more than ,
200 guests for a casual '
dinner. Not only did the
Hermelins personally
welcome all the guests,
but Mr. Hermelin was
busy helping serve the
delicious homemade crispy
potatoes. Some of the
patrons included: Rosanne
Duncan, Myrna and
Spencer Partrich, Leslie
Sternberg, Melissa and
Larry Lax, Sydell
Doug Schubot, Jeff and
Lynn Obran, Shirley (
Obran, Sharon and
Richard Brown, Nancy
and Jim Grosfeld, Eugene
and Marcia Applebaum.
The Hermelins were r_/
honorary chairmen of the
gala held on May 9.

Southfield-Lathrup High
School held a 25th anniver-
sary event for staff, former
staff members and former
students. Redbook magazine
recognized the school as one
of America's best in the
April issue. Some of the cur-
