CONGRATS . . . to Jerry
Weisman . . . on his 50th bir-
thday . . . celebrated with par-
ty for over 100 family and
friends by wife Nanci at Park
Lane Station . . . Congrats
also to David Otis, cele-
brating his 30th birthday .. .
' ' co Marvin Otis, Steve Horo-
witz, Carolyn Kraft and
Paula Liebowitz . . . on their
o birthdays . . . all also with
cakes from Nanci the same
evening.
• IT WAS ONE of your more
preferred type of parties . . . a
class affair befitting a class
gentleman . . . put on by Ex-
calibur boss Marty Wilk, who
always seems to shine best
when a prestigious occasion
Ilhas that certain touch of
elegance.
This was the recent Bob
Lanier Hall of Fame
Testimonial Dinner at Ex-
calibur, on Franklin and
Northwestern off 12 Mile,
Oicoordinated by Bernie
Schratt, Denny Schmerin and
Marty . . . The former Piston
great and hall-of-famer and
Bernie have been close
friends since Bob came here
as a rookie from St Bonaven-
ture College in the early '70s.
Bill Bonds did a terrific job
Oas emcee for the roast and
toast, mostly latter, and
started off by asking people to
give Nick Sorise of Nicky's a
0- hand for the wonderful food
. . . He was joking, of course,
because Excalibur Executive
6 Chef Patrick Dunn and Mar-
' ty showed some dining
presentation seldom seen .. .
Even at our table, Bill told
0 Marty, "The food's good" and
then kibitzingly asked Nicky,
"Did you cater it?" . . . Nick
replied, "Sure, my truck is out
back" and Marty almost said,
"His wife took the car
tonight."
The real down-to-earth par-
ty with much funfesting had
sports figures, sportscasters,
sportswriters and a lot of
heart.
Suzi Marsh and Dan War-
ren, regulars Tuesday
through Saturday at Ex-
calibur, were at their best,
playing for dinner and some
good dancing . . . After dinner
OP during a dance set, Suzi was
superb on a couple of Dinah
Washington great hits,
"What A Difference A Day
Makes" and "Unforgettable."
Elia Nicholas of E.G. Nicks
remembered when Bob used
▪ to come into Mitch's, where
Elia bused tables in the fami-
ly operation and says he was
big then but never more
powerful-looking than today
. . . Antonio Foglia, Stuart
Gorelick, Larry Warren .. .
Nick telling of soon opening
his and John Reaser's second
restaurant in Troy . . .
Wooden Horse on Rochester
Road . . . Susan Winton-
Feinberg with her Cleopatra
hair style and sexy Tiffany
perfume . . . Stuart Left with
his sports trivia wizardry . . .
Bill Bonds no slouch at
sports trivia himself . . . John
Cetrone recalling back to his
nine years at the old Playboy
Club that opened in 1963 on
Jefferson and Rivard . . . He
was bar manager when Bob
Lanier came in as the Piston's
first-round draft pick . . .
Someone asked where Bob
got his shoes and was told he
uses them as canoes to walk
on water . . . Bob wears size
22 . . . Goerge Blaha a disco
dancer of smooth ability .. .
Bernie at the mike talking
about it being Bob's bar mitz-
vah but still trying to figure
out a 13 somewhere.
The open bar, passed hors
d'oeuvres, lavish dinner by
Chef Patrick Dunn, much
conviviality and heartfelt
microphone comments by
teammates and friends for
one heck of a good evening .. .
This was how a party should
be given.
CONGRATS . . . to Ted and
Lenore Pines . . . on their
50th anniversary . . .
celebrated with cruise given
them by sons and daughters-
in-law Les and Annette and
Lee and Andrea and six
grandchildren.
DISA 'N DATA . . . Busload
of seniors from Federation
Apartments will be guests at
Oak Park Chorus' spring con-
cert this Sunday, 7 p.m., at
Congregation Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses . . . President
Seymour Schwartz and Har-
old Samuels, program chair-
man, team up for Oakland
Century Lodge "Scholarship
Night" this Wednesday at
Southfield Marriott honoring
Beati Jack's owners Gary and
dad Jack Cochran . . . Sy
Manello's definition of tact,
"Making your guests feel at
home when you wish they
were" . . . Abbondanza
Italiana ("Plenty of Italy")
celebration now at R.I.K.s on
Orchard Lake Road, describes
the restaurant's new look .. .
You can't get very much
more authentic than the head
chef at the new Hoa Kow of
West Bloomfield which
recently opened in Cross-
winds Mall, Orchard Lake
Road and Lone Pine . . .
Owner Gene Woo saw him
cooking with a wok on the
streets of China and brought
him to America . . . Why do
some cleaners nowadays find
it so tough to get dirt stains
out of a shirt's French cuffs. ❑
