He performed in summer stock and dinner theaters in Boston, and earned a theater degree from Brandeis University. After graduation, he moved to New York — an admitted ,/ greenhorn. "I was 23 (years old) and I looked about 12. I went to New York and I couldn't get arrested." He found his calling, he says, when he saw Forbidden Broadway shortly after it opened at the Paulson. "I thought, 'My God, I've got to do this show.' " He called Gerard Alessandrini and ask- ed to audition. Although no openings ex- isted in New York, he was hired to perform in (and later < direct) the Boston company. "He's got a great eye for how things look on stage, a wonderful ear with musical pitches and he can train some- body to do a great imitation," says Mr. Alessandrini. "I ad- (-_-\ mire him a lot and I'm very fortunate to find somebody like this to share the produc- tions with. When he directs it in another city, it's as good, if not better, than if they got the original direction." During his stay in Boston, Mr. Freedson studied acting CI\ and directing at Boston Con- servatory of Music. One of his professors there, Fran Char- nas, created The All Night Strut, the show playing op- posite Forbidden Broadway at the Gem Theatre. Ms. Char- ,-/ nas says she has always been impressed with Mt Freedson's talents and work ethic. "John is an incredibly disciplined, hard-working performer, and I think he's got a terrific voice. He's a real talent." Mr. Freedson grew up in Reading, Pa., where he was ac- tive in school and temple choirs. His voice has led him to work in radio and television spots, jingles and an upcoming Disney animated film called Aladdin. •-\ Although he has enjoyed success as an actor and direc- tor, he thinks of himself first as a writer. Three children's musicals he penned have been produced by the New England Children's Theatre Guild. He says he hopes to be among a group of writers who are "perpetuating the American musical" — including the ( "great Jewish composers like Jule Styne, Irving Berlin and Stephen Sondheim." Forbidden Broadway has an open-ended spring/summer run at the newly restored Gem Theatre on Woodward Avenue, across from the Fox. ❑
