The Jewish community can- not plead innocence. We do not recognize African Americans as our equals. If we did, would we allow the ap- palling levels of poverty and degree of violence which exist in our cities to continue? Would we allow fear and alienation to paralyze us? In order to reverse the social conditions which have bred the Rodney King verdict, the ensuing riots and the suffer- ing of African Americans, we as Jews must be part of a pro- cess of rebuilding a sense of human community. This is a special respon- sibility that is the result of our history. Each of us has something to contribute to this effort. This process will not be easy or comfortable: As individuals and as a com- munity, we will have to face our fears, our prejudices and our silence. As Jews, we are compelled to this through the obligation of tzedakah, which mandates that we not only give charity, but we prevent need. Next year is the 50th an- niversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The Jewish community can best honor the heros of 1943 by working to create a society of justice and dignity for the oppressed amongst us. If we fail to do so, 1993 will be remembered for uprisings of our own making. Jackie Victor Birmingham Richard Frank Ferndale Civics Lessons And Indignation I must respectfully disagree with the associate editor's civ- ic lesson (May 8) on the Los Angeles tragic events. The first observation is that his civic lesson is either in- complete or inadequate as he does not even mention the reaction of wanton destruc- tion, murder, greed and loot. Can a true civic lesson ig- nore that? That indeed would make any fair-minded person as furious as the author was. The second item difficult to understand is placing Nazi Kristallnacht in the same category with inner city racial disturbance. The writer must be aware that Kristallnacht was inspired, organized, and executed by Nazi authorities. I am certain the author did not mean to leave such an im- pression. Perhaps he was car- ried away a bit too far by righteous indignation. Dr. Milton J. Steinhardt Southfield 10 FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1992 Kosher Diversity On The Increase 4 I would like to thank you for the refreshing kosher cuisine article April 24. It's very im- al portant for your readers to see that there are a number of■ respectable local caterers pro- viding healthy and appetizing kosher meals. As the number of kosher 4 clientele increase, so has the .4 diversity of entrees.
