like I was doing it out of
habit," recalls Mr. Rifkin.
"It is a lovely, comforting
ritual, but something was off
for me."
While not going through
some of the rituals, Mr.
Rifkin has no plans to let go
\-7 of the important role
Judaism plays in his life. In-
deed, he is proud to point out
that his own background has
provided background for his
characters.
"If I do play a Jewish part,
as I do on 'Rosie,' it is impor-
tant that it be done with in-
tegrity," says Mr. Rifkin.
He wants to stamp out
stereotypes. "Just because
> Ben wears a yarmulka
doesn't mean I have to do a
` mazel toy' every two
minutes or an coy vey.' "
Mr. Rifkin had a say in
what Ben says on screen, in
addition to the way he ap-
pears. "Maybe the Ben that I
play and what the network
wanted are two different
people," says the actor imp-
ishly, admitting that the
network "seemed nervous
about the yarmulka."
It was a TV hat trick: The
yarmulka stayed.
It was a smart move for the
series. Ben adds an edge to
N the Saturday night drama.
▪ "There is a Talmudic
wisdom to the character that
I like," says Ron Rifkin.
Ron Rifkin's own
background has come to the
forefront in other areas, too.
He rose to the occasion while
starring in "The Sunset
Gang," a Yiddish-inspired
telefilm on PBS' "American
Playhouse."
"The writers did not know
how to do the seder scene, so
I told them the way it goes,"
he says. "That scene came
out of my own knowledge."
Ron Rifkin lends his voice
in other ways. Appearing in
The Tenth Man, Paddy
Chayefsky's classic drama
about a motley minyan, Mr.
Rifkin also sang the
liturgical music used in bet-
ween scenes.
Coming from an Orthodox
background, his parents were
"surprised" at their sons un-
traditional career choice.
