Sgt. Jost described talking
to Jews inside the ghetto.
"When they asked how long
things would go on the way
they were, I told them: 'Soon
the war will be over and
everything will be all right
and you'll go back to your
home.' "
There is no question of Sgt.
Jost's empathy for the starv-
ing and dying Jews, says
Museum Gallery Director
Sharon Zimmerman, who
brought the exhibit to
Detroit.
"His photographs show
concern for the tragedy un-
folding before him," she
said.
The photos in the collec-
tion are grouped according
to six themes. They are "The
Street," "Beggars," "The
Yellow Star," "Peddlers,"
"Children," and "Burial."
Researchers at Yad
Vashem decided not to cap-
tion any of the photographs
but simply introduce each
theme with passages from
diarists living in the ghetto.
Ms. Zimmerman has also
brought to the gallery "The
Mission," the life-work of
Israeli-born artist, Dubi
Arie. The seven-panel pain-
ting, depicting stages
throughout Jewish history,
including the birth of the
modern state of Israel,
makes its world debut this
weekend.
To accompany these ex-
hibits, Ms. Zimmerman has
also organized a Yiddish
Cultural Festival.
"Although the events of
World War II and the Holo-
caust virtually destroyed the
existence of Yiddish culture,
the richness of Yiddish life
has been kept alive through
literature, music, theater
and film," she said.
Films like, Yidl Mitn
Fiddle, The Dybbuk, and
Green Fields, are among the
15 films to be featured at the
JCC and Maple 3 Theaters
this month. ❑
