SPECIAL ...$219 • MOUNT PLEASANT GAMBLING With Dinner June 20, July 18 and consultative assistance from the foreign staff, whose numbers now include myself and a psychiatric nurse from England. Patients include victims of domestic violence, people who are extremely destitute and have nowhere else to stay, depressed patients, psychotic patients, and patients with various physical ailments (like malaria), which affect their state of mental health. Basically, they are people with the same sorts of pro- blems seen in a psychiatric emergency setting in a large American city. However, some of the en- vironmental factors which cause these problems are more severe here than in most parts of the U.S. There is widespread poverty, com- pounded by years of war dur- ing which most people en- countered some type of traumatic experience. There is also uncertainty regarding the future, which is a great stress to people living in the camps, especially at this time, as repatriation to Cambodia is approaching. Many still do not know whether or not they have family surviving in Cambodia. Perhaps most importantly, people are afraid that they will return to land that is still not at peace. My job has been mostly to help patients who are ex- tremely depressed or psychotic and could benefit from Western medication, much of which was passed out quite indiscriminately before my arrival. We foreigners tend to get involved when help is needed in obtaining rice rations, mosquito netting, or some other intervention with UNBRO (United Na- tions Border Relief Operation). The most interesting part of my job has been the oppor- tunity to see the refugee situation firsthand. I have read several books about con- centration camp life during the Holocaust, and find that thre are a lot of similarities in the refugee camp. Granted, the situation, at least now, is not as severe. People are not being slaughtered, and they are not starving to death (though many were tortured and on the edge of starvation during Kmer Rouge times). But a basic lack of freedom, and :1 $39 • BRANSON, MISSOURI May 21-26, July 16-21, Aug. 20-25, Oct. 8-13 (Celebrity Shows, Meals, Tours, Shepherd of the $487 Hills, More) May 15-17 & thru Oct. 2 Cruises, Dinner, More $169 • DETROIT TIGER BASEBALL In Cleveland July 31-Aug. 2 Box seats for 3 games, 2 full $169 breakfasts & all transfers • TORONTO CARIBANA FESTIVAL July 31- Aug. 2 $189 AIR ONLY from $219 • Las Vegas from $528 +tax • London • Frankfurt ....from $608+tax from $668 +tax • Paris • Atlantic City 1-Day trips from HAWAII PACKAGE McCoy Inc.
