I

just returned from
Bangkok, where I spent
the Passover seder. There
were Jews from all over the
world, including Asia,
Europe, America and Israel.
My adventure in Southeast
Asia centers on people who
have suffered, like the
children of Israel. My adven-
ture has to do with a group of
people who haVe suffered
through 22 years of war.
First, there was the Viet-
nam War, and the fighting
that spread across the border.
Then came the Kmer Rouge,
and a four-year reign of terror.
During this time, almost
everyone I have spoken with

sometimes everyone.
Estimates are that. 1-2
million out of a total popula-
tiOn of 8 million died during
this time, either through star-
vation or through execution
as a rsult of attempts to carry
out the Kmer Rouge ideology
of wiping out the upper
classes and creating a self-
sufficient peasant society.
I am certain that my Jewish
upbringing was in large part
responsible for my winding
.up working here.
I work in Site 2, a refugee
camp of approximately
200,000 people on the Thai-
Cambodian border. My job
description is, believe it or
not, psychiatrist.
I work in two centers for
mental health and traditional
healing. The centers include
kru kmer, or traditional
healers, who treat minor
physical and mental ailments
by traditional means. In addi-
tion to the kru Amer, there is
a counseling department set
up with the help of various
foreign staff who have work-
ed here throughout the last
five years.
The centers are run by the
Amer staff, with some logistic
