Canal. When Mr. Sofer was
1 year old, his family made
aliyah to Israel from
Baghdad. He was an honor
student, an avid sports fan.
He loved reading and spent
long hours in the library.
"Translating the stories
takes an emotional toll on
you," said Diane Katz, who
worked on a few of the Heb-
rew biographies with Susie
Harold and Mrs. Laks. "But
it was worth it. There's
nothing like it to bring home
what the day truly means to
Israelis, not to mention what
it should mean to all Jews."
Mrs. Laks said 200
histories have been trans-
lated. She is at work on a
special biography based on
the material.
It's the story of Moshe
Levy, a close family friend
and buddy of her son,
Shachar.
Mr. Levy, a 19-year-old in-
fantry soldier in the Golani
Brigade, was murdered by
three Palestinian Liberation
Organization terrorists in
1985 while home on leave.
"He got into a car driven
by PLO members and they
killed him and then tried to
burn his body," Mrs. Laks
said. "The attack took place
three kilometers from our
home in Petach Tikvah."
"That's why it's important
to remember and observe
Yom Hazikaron," Mrs. Laks
said. "Without the Israeli
soldiers who have given and
continue to give their lives
for Israel, we wouldn't have
a Yom Ha'atzma'ut (Israel
Independence Day) to
celebrate." ❑
