"Each community member was asked to personally share in a ceremony com- memorating Yom- Hazikaron," said Sivan Maas, director, Israel Desk. "We thought this would be the best way to remember the Israeli whose story they learned through their letter." The names of the soldiers were inscribed in a special memorial book following the dedication of the monument at the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center. In her hands lay all that remained of 17,000 Israeli soldiers. Mrs. Laks, an Israeli who lives in West Bloomfield, went to Israel last year and brought back volumes of photos and biographies of Israeli soldiers who fell defending Israel between 1948 and 1981. The biographies have to be published, Mrs. Laks thought. There's no better way to share the meaning of Yom Hazikaron, Israel Re- membrance Day, with the Jewish community of Detroit. "Most American Jews don't understand what Yom Hazikaron means to Israelis living inside and outside of Israel," she said. "In America, Memorial Day is a day off from work, spent largely attending picnics and barbecues. In Israel, it's very solemn. There isn't a person or family who hasn't lost a friend or family mem- ber in war." Yom Hazikaron was observed Tuesday in a ceremony at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The first monu- ment outside Israel dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers was dedicated. General Uzi Narkiss, commander of Israel's eastern front during the Six-Day War, delivered the keynote address. He gave eyewitness accounts of what it took to unify Jerusalem. The service, attended by several hundred Americans and Israelis, touched off a week-long Israel In- dependence celebration, which includes an Israeli street fair and cabaret, and the annual walk for Israel. Months ago, a Yom Hazikaron committee, chaired by Doreen Hermelin, Joel Tauber, Dennis Bernard, Betsy Heuer, Adina Laks and Yif- tach Maas, set teams of Israelis and Americans to work translating histories of Israel's fallen soldiers. They mailed 10,000 enve- lopes to members of the Jewish community with the name of a man or woman, boy "In Israel, there isn't a person or a family who hasn't lost a friend." Adina Laks designed by Mr. Maas and Birmingham architect Bob Ziegelman. Among soldiers re- membered were Benyamin Samuel, Eliyahu Salomon and Yaakov Sofer. Mr. Samuel, who would be 48 today, was sent with his tank unit to the Sinai during the Yom Kippur War. He died on the shores of the Bitter Lake, Oct. 17, 1973. Before the war, Mr. Salomon became an instruc- tor in officer's school. Following his military ser- vice, he studied electronic and industrial engineering in California. Mr. Salomon, who would be 56, was also killed during the Yom Kippur War. When the war broke out, Mr. Salomon, a reconnaissance soldier in the Intelligence Corps, didn't wait to receive his draft papers. He packed his bags, kissed his wife and three sons goodbye, and re- ported for duty. He was killed in a reconnaissance mission over the Golan Heights. His plane was hit by a rocket on Oct. 11, 1973. Mr. Sofer, who would be 42, volunteered to become a paratrooper in August 1968. When the Yom Kippur War began he joined his unit which was fighting in the south. He was killed while trying to cross the Suez
