each teach five elementary
schools. They are full-time
D.A.R.E. officers, going into
classes K-5. But only fifth-
graders get the full cur-
riculum.
"We want to reach these
kids before they enter mid-
dle school," says Officer Jar-
rell, a member of the
D.A.R.E. unit since the spr-
ing of 1990. "After that,
they're more susceptible to
drugs and alcohol."
Officer Jarrell, on the force
for seven years, underwent
intensive training to teach
students about drugs.
"I spent several years in
the United States Marine
Corps before becoming a
police officer," he says. "I
thought that was the most
stressful experience of my
life. Now I say the D.A.R.E.
training was the second
most stressful experience of
my life."
Officer Jarrell, a 41/2-year
veteran of the Southfield
Traffic Bureau, spent 80
consecutive hours at the
Police Training Academy in
Lansing.
"We couldn't go home for
two weeks," says Officer
Jarrell, father of three
young children. "We learned
classroom management,
teaching modalities, public
speaking, lesson planning.
Our final exam was giving a
20-minute and 45-minute
presentation to fellow offi-
cers who had to act like fifth-

graders."
"The most important thing •
we stress is that kids won't
be offered drugs by a
stranger in a dark trench
coat standing in a secluded
corner of a park," he says.
"It's almost always from a
friend, from someone you
know."
Officer Jarrell recently
received a commendation for
his D.A.R.E. work from
Southfield Police Chief
Joseph Thomas.
"We love it when .Officer
Jarrell comes," says Sherry
Kraft, 11. "We get to talk to
him during lunch and ask
him any kind of question."
"Ire inspires us to be the
best," says Marlene Jajou.
Tynisa Sarpy, a new stu-
dent from El Paso, Texas,
had a D.A.R.E. program in
her previous school.
"It's important to know
about what to do about
drugs," she says, "so you
don't end up learning about
them the hard way."
Most students in Miss
Blau's fifth grade say
they've never been offered
drugs.
"I'd just say no," Elizabeth
Mathis says.
"Well, what if it was from
a good friend?" asks Melissa.
"I'd still say no; I'd just
drop her," Lizzie says.
"I know that drugs are
real, real bad, and I just
wouldn't take it," Marlene
says. ❑
