Tel Aviv (JTA) — Mekorot,
the national water carrier,
resumed 24-hour pumping
last week after the Treasury
decided it was shortsighted
to waste tens of millions of
cubic meters of water a day
in order to save on electric
bills.
The water comes from
Lake Kinneret, which
overflowed its banks because
of the abnormally heavy
rains and snowfalls in the
past winter.
Mekorot was pumping a
daily average of 1.5 million
cubic meters into the na-
tional pipeline system. But
that was reduced.
In order to prevent the
flooding of shoreside com-
munities, the sluice gates
near Kibbutz Degania at the
southern end of Lake Kin-
neret were opened, sending
torrents of fresh water pour-
ing into the Jordan River.
The water flowed uselessly
to the Dead Sea, a saline
body at the lowest point on
the Earth's surface, where it
soon evaporated.
It took a while, but the
Treasury finally realized
that the importance of water
to Israel's economy
outweighed the savings of a
few shekels per kilowatt.
