Purim celebrates the victory of the Jewish peo- ple over Haman the Aggagite who sought to destroy us. Mardi Gras is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which ushers in 40 days of prepara- tion for Easter. Both are joyous celebrations which occur at a similar time of year; otherwise there are no similarities and no com- parisons should be drawn. Purim is not a Jewish Mardi Gras, Passover is not a Jewish Easter, and Chanukkah is not a Jewish Christmas! When we as Jews allow ourselves to transform Judaism into Christian terms, we cheat our children and ourselves of the wonder- ful heritage that our fore- bears worked so hard to preserve. Susan C. Pollack Oak Park March Of Living Sponsorship My family and I read with great interest the article in your April 24th issue on the Detroit area teen-agers par- ticipating in the March of the Living program. We were, however, disappointed that the article gave the impres- sion that all 12 of the par- ticipants from our area were attending the program under the sponsorship of BBYO. In fact, three of the 12 teens were representing other Jewish youth programs. For example, our daughter Elana is representing Young Judaea, the Hadassah- sponsored Zionist youth movement, and the Agency for Jewish Education. . . . and a general criminal look. When we are reminded of these stereotypes, we are told how awful they were — that they were racist and anti- Semitic portrayals. And we are warned of this type of thing happening again. Yet, most Fridays, The Jewish News runs the same general appearance of the Arab on its editorial page. In , "Dry Bones," the Arabs have big noses, dirty appearances, guns and bombs in the pocket, and criminal outlooks. It almost reminds me of the Nazi cartoons of the Jew . . . I encourage The Jewish') News to lead our community by ceasing the publication of "Dry Bones." Such an action would demonstrate compas- sion and represent a stand against all stereotyping. Alan J. The recipe ap- peared in Ethel Hoffman's column in the March 27 issue of The Jewish News. Ronald Harris Southfield 'Dry Bones' And Stereotypes The Jewish News has been printing the cartoon, "Dry Bones," on its editorial pages for some time now. The car- toon is neither funny nor ap- propriate. Rather, it is among the ugliest forms of stereotyp- ing that we are currently ex- posed to in the Jewish press. We are often reminded of the Nazi characterization of the Jew. It includes the dirty appearance, the big nose, wads of money in the pocket, 1 OPINION rim. 1111.11 Torah Continued from Page 7 and said, "Eloheynu, Veylohey avotaynu, our God and god of our ancestors, we ask Your forgiveness. We mean no harm — quite the contrary, we mean only to serve You and to do Your will with perfect hearts and in perfect faith. "We ask for your forgiveness and pledge to do our best in the future to pro- tect Your teachings and carry Your truth proudly and humbly. Be with us, dear God, as we move forward now to serve You and to bless Your Name." And then I placed the Torah back in the ark. We ended the service by singing the Mee Shebayrach prayer, asking for healing on N our community and on our congregation.
