Synagogues
Continued from preceding page
who come to see it — the
original congregation was
established by German Jews
in 1845. They created what
was then the third Reform
congregation in the United
States after Charleston and
Baltimore.
The founders of the con-
gregation began with $26 and
started to worship in a tene-
ment on the Lower East Side.
As the members grew more
affluent, they moved uptown
and built four synagogues
before they merged with
another congregation, Beth-
El in 1927. Soon they were
ready to build an even larger
synagogue.
They hired three Jewish ar-
chitects to design their new
temple, which . cost $3.5
million to build. On Rosh
Hashanah 1929, the mem-
bers held their first service in
the new temple.
"And it looked almost exact-
ly as it looks now," said the
guide.
She pointed out the bimah
made of marble imported
from France, the hand-set
mosiac; and the windows on
one side portraying the
famous synagogues of Europe,
while on the other side are
temples of the United States.
Dominating the corner of
Fifth Avenue at 65th Street,
this striking synagogue is a
visual reminder of the
dramatic journey made by the
early immigrants. From the
Lower East Side to Fifth
Avenue, they have made their
mark on the city. Seeing their
varied synagogues is one way
the Jewish traveler can
retrace their remarkable
journey.
