Rosenblatt.
The next stop on a syna-
gogue tour of New York is
midtown Manhattan. Here
the changes in the syna-
gogues reflect changes in the
status of New York's Jews as
they moved northward and
built newer and grander
houses of worship.

synagogues for every de-
nomination, and some are
even based on the congre-
gants' occupations, like the
Millinery Center Synagogue
and the Garment Center
Congregation.
As for the Fifth Avenue
Synagogue at 5 East 62nd
Street just off Fifth, that's
nicknamed "Millionaires'
Shul" because its Orthodox
congregants live in one of
Manhattan's most exclusive
neighborhoods.
The Park Avenue Syna-
gogue at 50 East 87th Street
is similarly situated in a posh
location.
Several midtown syna-
gogues have historic signifi-
cance. The city's oldest syna-
gogue in continuous use is
the Central Synagogue at 652
Lexington Avenue. The con-
gregation was established in
1839 and the temple was com-
pleted in 1872.
Its architecture is as note-
worthy as its history. Model-
ed after the Dohnany Syna-
gogue in Budapest, it is a
striking sight: a large corner
building with two distinctive-
ly Moorish-style domes jut-
ting skyward.
Also of historic interest is
Congregation Shearith Israel
on Central Park West at 70th
Street, known as the Spanish
and Portuguese Synagogue.
This was the fifth synagogue
built by the early congregants
who first worshipped on Mill
Street.
Inside are two sanctuaries.
The smaller chapel, used for
daily service, has some fur-
nishings that date from 1730.
In the large sanctuary are
brass lamps, a high ceiling
and marble columns framing
the ark.
The synagogue that cap-
tures the journey of the im-
migrants from the Lower
East Side to prosperity is
Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue.
Built on the site of the man-
sion of John Jacob Astor, the
massive sanctuary seats
2,500 congregants and is the
world's largest synagogue.
