Darling Of The Ice Company Is A 4-Year-Old Skater KIMBERLY LIFTON FREE DELIVERY! In Pineridge Center No Rd. at 10 Mile Rd. (1-3/4 Miles south of1-96) Grandma Phyllis Lowenstein, mom Judy Roberts and the Ice Company's Kevin Bryzek encourage A.J. Roberts. S porting a helmet for protection, Andrea "A.J." Roberts tested out the ice rink for the first time a few months ago. She fell more than she skated. But tonight, everything changes for 4-year-old A.J. when she dresses as a cricket to take the stage in the Southfield Ice Company. If, by chance, she does take a fall, A.J. knows exactly what to do. "I just get right back up," said A.J., of West Bloom- field, the youngest (and newest) skater in this weekend's 21st annual Southfield Ice Company. When A.J. leads a well- costumed team of youngsters onto the ice for a perfor- mance of Picnic In A Magical Garden, she brings a bit of history to the ice. She is a third-generation member of the ice company, started through the City of Southfield Parks and Recreation department at the urging of many skating enthusiasts, including her grandmother, Phyllis. Loewenstein. Mrs. Loewenstein and A.J.'s mother, Judy Loewenstein Roberts, skated in the first Ice Company and continued working on the show for many years. Now, young A.J. is follow- ing the family tradition. A.J. had just started skating lessons when Ice Company director Ron Basten asked Mrs. Roberts if her daughter would like to be cast in the show to replace a child who dropped out of the performance. "But she can hardly skate," Mrs. Roberts replied. With a little coaching, he said, A.J. would do just fine. "I was thrilled to have my daughter follow in my footsteps," Mrs. Roberts said. Mrs. Loewenstein started figure skating at age 5 on speed skates. But she bid farewell to the sport when she fell through the ice on a lake in her hometown of Boston. Then when Mrs. Loewens- tein's children were born, the entire family started skating together at' local rinks and on outdoor ponds. "We have always been a skating family," said Mrs. Loewenstein. Her husband, Marshall, and sons played hockey while she and her daughter took a liking to figure skating. Other Jewish members of the skating troupe are Elana Averbach, Doug Burda, Michael Gartner, Renay Gartner, Brian Hartman, Arica Jacobson, Ian Kamin- sky, Hallie Kaminsky, Risa Litchman, Renee Lieber- man, Erica Meltzer, Aman- da Mintzer, Stacey Nelkin, Erik Phillips, Craig Phillips, David Sherline, Stephanie Sherline, Lindsay Sklar, Heather Sklar, Alexa Shen- copp, Kari Goldman, Charlene Fine, Ron Adels- tein, Madelyn Phillips and Cinday Kaminsky. Ice Company 1992 began Wednesday and continues with five weekend perfor- mances through Sunday at the Southfield ice arena. ❑ A.J. on her own. .
