Pollard Sees
Tele-Seder .

Convicted spy Jonathan
Pollard attended a seder in
Washington last week —
through the miracle of
modern electronics.
Mr. Pollard, now serving a
life term at the federal
prison at Marion, Illinois,
participated in the first 15
minutes of a seder at the
home of Michael Beren-
baum, director of the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Muse-
um, via a teleconference
hookup.
Also attending the seder at
Mr. Berenbaum's house was
Mr. Pollard's lawyer, Judith
Barnett.
Although Mr. Berenbaum
said that he was not condon-
ing Mr. Pollard's spying, he
also said that "a lot of the
words we say at the seder
about freedom and libera-
tion are more difficult to say
when you're talking to
someone who's serving a life
sentence. It was a poignant
moment."
Prison rules prevent a
"real" seder for Mr. Pollard.
The 15-minute time limit
was imposed by the prison,
which restricts inmates'
"social" calls to four 15-
minute calls per week.
The abbreviated seder was
conducted entirely in Eng-
lish. Prison rules forbid the
use of languages other than
English in calls between in-
mates and outsiders.

Woman Heads
OU Office

Can women have an im-
portant role in the political
activities of Orthodox Jews?
A recent decision by the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
(OU) suggests that the an-
swer is "yes.'
The OU, which has become
more active in political and
legislative affairs in Wash-
ington, has hired a new di-
rector for its Institute for
Public Affairs — Betty
Ehrenberg. She is now the
director-general of the
Israeli counsel-general's of-
fice in New York.
The decision came after an
intense internal debate over
the most appropriate focus
for the OU's public affairs
efforts.
Gender was not a factor in
the debate over a new direc-
tor, say OU sources. If so,
this is a remarkable com-
mentary.
Her first task will be to de-
velop a broad membership
base for the Institute. The
group does not now have an
independent membership.
