More and more, dialogues
between blacks and Jews are
all talk and no action.
The American Jewish
Committee and the Joint
Center for Political Studies
are trying to change all that.
At a recent Washington
meeting sponsored by the
N two groups,' 15 Jewish and
15 black leaders tried to lay
a foundation for a joint effort
to find new solutions to the
__ growing problem of poverty
in the U.S.
"There is a sense that it's
expected that blacks and
Jews work together on civil
rights issues," said Gary
Rubin, director of national
affairs for the American
Jewish Committee and the
prime mover behind the con-
ference.
- "But that," he said,
"hasn't spilled over into
other domestic areas. There
has to be a new sense that
this traditional coalition will
move into other social • policy
issues."
The conference focused on
programs that might cut
into the gruesome statistics
of poverty: job training, wel-
fare-to-work transitions and
creating jobs in inner city
areas.
"Relationships improve
• not by sitting around and
talking about them," he
said, "but by getting
together on issues on which
you have a joint interest.
Jobs and the economic condi-
tion of this country are hav-
ing a dramatic impact on
both of our communities."
Also represented at the
meeting were the Anti-
Defamation League, the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women, the UJA-Federation
of Jewish Philanthropies of
New York and the National
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Advisory Council.
