search committee has
formed to find a
replacement for
Rabbi Marc Volk, executive
director of Akiva Hebrew
Day School.
Rabbi Volk, school fund-
raiser since 1989, resigned
last week because of per-
sonal reasons, according to
Barry Eisenberg, school
board and executive com-
mittee president.
"He approached the board
and said he would not be
able to renew his contract,"
Mr. Eisenberg said. "It was
his decision and had nothing
to do with the school."
Rabbi Volk said he'll stay
at Akiva until June 30, the
close of his contract.
"My decision to leave was
a surprise to the board,"
Rabbi Volk said.
The search committee
hopes to find a replacement
by July 1. Mr. Eisenberg
said the school is looking for
a new executive director or a
business and office manager
who can fund-raise.
"Rabbi Volk was responsi-
ble for fund-raising only,"
Mr. Eisenberg said. "We
also need someone to take
responsibility for the
physical plant, the office,
purchasing, collecting and
negotiating."
Up until now, ad-
ministrative responsibilities
have been divided among
the executive committee,
Mr. Eisenberg said. Rabbi

Volk, 42, came to Detroit
from St. Louis, where he was
regional director of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
and the National Conference
of Synagogue Youth Mid-
west Region. He coordinated
synagogue leadership con-
ferences for the first time in
that region's history and de-
veloped a fund-raising net-
work both inside and outside
St. Louis.
"Rabbi Volk was very good
for Akiva," Mr. Eisenberg
said. "The last two banquets
and journals were the
largest ever, and he's
expanded the school's base of
donors. But I'd say his mqin
contribution was spreading
the school's philosophy and
position within the commun-
ity. ,,
Rabbi Volk plans to leave
the Detroit area to explore
other opportunities in fund-
raising. D

he Washington at-
torney for the Chabad
House of Western
Michigan must soon make a
decision for Chanukah:
Should the group appeal to
the full Appeals Court or
directly to the U.S. Supreme
Court last week's Appeals
Court decision to ban a me-
norah from Calder Plaza in
Grand Rapids?
According to Chabad
House's Rabbi Yosef We-
ingarten, the court in Cin-
cinnati issued a 75-page
decision in the 18-month-old
case. In a 2-1 split decision,
the Appeals Court held that
the menorah is a religious

symbol and should be bann-
ed from the plaza because of
its proximity to government
buildings.
Rabbi Weingarten said
Lubavitch will continue to
erect a Chanukah menorah
in downtown Grand Rapids'
Monroe Mall, where other
seasonal displays are placed.
For the last two years, pen-
ding the appeal, the group
has erected menorahs at
both sites.
The Appeals Court deci-
sion upholds a U.S. District
Court permanent injunction
against the display in Calder
Plaza as an unconstitutional
government endorsement of
religion.
Nat Lewin, the attorney
for Chabad House, is leaning
