Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Association of Israeli Travel
Agents has accused the
German airline Lufthansa of
anti- Semitism and de-
nounced an advertisement it
ran in the local press as wor-
thy of the Nazi newspaper,
Der Sturmer.
But the airline, which ag-
gressively woos Israeli
customers, called the
charges nonsense. And a
Hebrew University professor
backed Lufthansa up with a
warning against unjustified
attributions of anti-
Semitism.
The travel agents, who sell
most airline tickets on com-
mission, published their
complaint against Lufthan-
sa in a full-page advertise-
ment in the Hebrew press.
It followed an ad by the
German air carrier announc-
ing that it would henceforth
sell flights to German:
directly to Israeli traveler
at a reduced rate, bypassin
the travel agents.
The Lufthansa advertis
ment featured a lin,,
drawing caricature of
typical Israeli customs
which the Israeli tray ,
agents association said for
ed like "a Yid with a 1(
nose and a horn growing c.
of his head."
The Travel Agents Assoc.
ation's ad, signed by i
chairman, Kobi Karni, r
produced the drawing ai -
ran a typical anti- Semit
caricature from Der Sturm
next to it, under th
headline: "This is . the wr
we appear in their (Derma
eyes."
The association also o
jected to Lufthansa's dep..
tion of a travel agent as
"fat, cigar-smoking slo
with his feet on the desk."
Denying an anti-Semiti
slur, a Lufthansa spokes
said that the airline chose
lighthearted, comic a
proach for its advertisemei
He said a so-called "Jew
hat" on one of the earth(
figures was no more an..;
Semiticthan the headgear o
the Simpson Family, th
animated American telex
sion series very popular
Israel.
Israel Radio suggeste
that the travel agents wer
overreacting.
Hebrew University Pr
fessor S. Simon, an authori
on Nazism and ant
Semitism, seemed to confer;
that view. He hinted th,
the travel agents might b
using the charge of anti-
Semitism to get back at the
airline.
