Schochet Award
To Bayla Landsman

Bayla Landsman, special
education coordinator for the
Agency for Jewish Education,
will receive the 1992
Schochet Family Outstanding
Teacher Award, sponsored by
the Frank and Freda
Schochet Fund of the United
Jewish Foundation.
An educational consultant
to the AJE's Teacher
Resource Center and a special
education teacher at the
agency, Mrs. Landsman will
'receive the award for her plan
to Create a handbook for
teachers of Judaic and
Hebrew subjects for students
with unique learning styles.
The handbook will provide
teachers with some basic
tools to identify and teach
children with hidden
disabilities. Through the use
of Judaic subjects, it will focus
on recognizing and working
better with children with
learning disabilities. The
handbook, which should be
completed in a year, will be
available to teachers locally
through the AJE Teacher
Resource Center and na-
tionally through the Jewish
Special Educators Network.
The $3,000 Schochet prize
is to be used to fund a project
'n ahy area of Jewish learn-
ing and teaching. It is ad-
ministered in partnership
with the Jewish Federation.
Mrs. Landsman holds a
master's degree and cer-
tificate in special education
from Ade1phi University, a
bachelor's degree and secon-
dary education certificate
from Carlow College in Pitt-
sburg and a Hebrew lbacher's
License from the Beth Jacob
Teachers Seminary in
Jerusalem.
Mrs. Landsman will receive
the award at a future meeting
of the Federation Board of
Governors.

Annual Conference

The Sholem Aleichem In-
stitute will hold its annual
weekend conference at Butzel
Conference Center May 1-3.

bat commemorating the
yahrtzeit of Sholem
Aleichem.
Saturday's program will
feature David B. Guralnik,
lexicographer and Yiddishist.
He will present two lectures:
"How Shall I Say It?," that
chronicles the dozen
languages that have served
Jews throughout history; and
"Yiddish — Whither or
Wither?" that considers the
past, present and future of
Yiddish.
