ing on marketing strategies
for years. Last week, JVS
kicked off its volunteer
business advisory board,
which aims to help Soviet
emigres plug into business
networks.
"We want to create a
group of volunteers who will
come to JVS and will talk
about what it is like to func-
tion in business," says Karol
Moxley, JVS supervisor of
refugee services. "In addi-
tion, they will work directly
as mentors and help with
resume writing."
Dr. Cole, who started a
program at Temple Beth El
to assist refugees in
marketing skills, has team-
ed up with JVS to multiply
the impact. He joins a
retired Ford engineer,
Michael Schuman, who has
been volunteering at JVS
since September.
"Human beings can't fit
into a format," Dr. Cole
says. "They need to get in-
volved in technical associa-
tions. Most of them don't
even understand what skills
they have or how to explain
it to someone else in Eng-
lish.
"JVS can manage things,
but they are not engineers,"
he says. "We need profes-
sionals to pitch in to help
Soviet professionals.
"This is an opportunity for
us, as Jews, to help them
find some way into the
American cultural main-
stream," Dr. Cole says. "We
have to do it because JVS
can't do it all."
Mr. Schuman has been
helping clients practice
interviews and complete job
applications. He calls
himself a technical adviser.
"JVS teaches them about
the concept of a resume,"
Mr. Schuman says. "I can
see what is not right in
technical terms."
Mr. Schuman has con-
ducted some staff training
workshops, which JVS hopes
will continue with help from
the volunteer board. Also on
the board are executives
from Foamade Industries, an
automobile supplier that
makes foam products for
dashboards and door panels.
When Dr. Cole first met
the Smargonskys, neither
could communicate well
their acquired skills. He
taught them how to shake
hands and how to greet peo-
ple.
Their resumes, he says, did
not adequately reflect their
high degree of skills.
"My job was to put words
to their human experiences,
and to help them decide
which talents were
marketable," he says. 0
