"I enjoy volunteering. It's fun,
and you meet a lot of nice peo-
ple!"
Another husband-and-wife
team of volunteers is Murray
and Joann Remer of Oak
Park. As route marshals,
they'll once again make sure
runners are heading in the
right direction, offer vocal en-
couragement, shout split
times and be ready to act if
emergency help is needed.
"You can tell from the faces
of the runners as they're
trudging along that they real-
ly appreciate you," said Joann
Remer.
This is the first time that
Ellen Jacobs of West Bloom-
field has volunteered to work
at the Half Marathon, but
she's no stranger to donating
time.
"I volunteer a lot," said
Jacobs, who has served as
president of the parent-
teacher group at Orchard
Lake Middle School and the
head of volunteers for the
Temple Israel Sisterhood Art
Fair.
"I've walked in races, so I
know how important
volunteers are in conducting
races," Jacobs added.
"You always meet nice peo-
ple when you volunteer to
work at an event because
these are people who choose
to be there, and don't have to
be there. That's a big
difference.
"Also, it's a short-term com-
mitment. After you get done
working at the Half Mara-
thon, for example, you're done
for the day!"
Jacobs gives the Half Mara-
thon organizers high marks
for how well they work with
their volutneers.
Besides the jobs mentioned
earlier, Half Marathon
volunteers will work at the
busy registiation tables at
the high school, and hand out
water at the eight aid sta-
tions positioned every two
miles on the Half Marathon
course and at the 1.5-mile
mark for the 5K race.
The Half Marathon will
begin at 12:30 p.m. and the
5K run will start at 12:42
p.m.
The event is ' sponsored by
West Bloomfield Parks and
Recreation and Henry Ford
Medical Center-West Bloom-
field. The Concerned Citizens
of West Bloomfield, Crystal
Echo Beach Association and
the Greater West Bloomfield
Chamber of Commerce also
are participating in the
festivities.
Both races will begin and
end at the high school. Run-
ners can register on race day.

Bloomfield Parks and Recrea-
tion, 334-5660. ❑
