Cantor Vieder, a member of the Cantors Assembly, is an elected member of the assembly executive board. He came to Adat Shalom as associate cantor in 1960 and has been the synagogue can- tor since 1974. Cantor Howard Glantz came to Adat Shalom as associate cantor in July 1991. A graduate of the Cantors In- stitute of the Jewish Theological Seminary, he is the founder of the Cantors Assembly Dor L'Dor program. Cantor Aaron Bensoussan is the cantor of Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights, N.Y. A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Cantor Bensoussan performs using ancient Middle Eastern in- struments from his homeland of Morocco. Cantor Nathan Lam is the Cantor of the Stephen S. Wise Temple in Bel Air, Calif. He studied music and Judaica at the University of Judaism. Cantor Lam is the president of the Cantors Assembly. The four cantors will be ac- companied by Cantor Sholom Kalib, composer and professor of music at Eastern Michigan University and Cantor of Congregation Beth Israel in Flint. Chaired by David Herme- lin, the mission will include programs designed around the interests of affinity groups. In addition to sight- seeing, mission-goers will meet with Israeli government officials and participate in ceremonies for Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day). The trip will climax in Jerusalem for Yom Ha'atz- ma'ut --- Israel Independence Day. The mission is being co- chaired by Susan Citrin, Dr. Conrad Giles and Jane Sherman. Volunteers will reach out to hundreds of Detroiters in the coming weeks in a series of six Allied Jewish Campaign phonathons leading up to the Campaign's Days of Decision, May 31-June 5. After June 5, Federation's budgeting and planning divi- sions will allocate Campaign dollars to agencies based on how much money has been raised at that time. To date, the Campaign has raised $22.5 million, a $586,000 increase over last year from the same con- tributors. However, many peo- ple have not yet made a gift. Contributors have the op- tion this year of using their Visa or MasterCard credit cards. Robert Aronson, executive vice president of Federation, will host a gathering of Jewish professionals in the social services and staff of Jewish communal service agencies on behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign, April 28, at the Jewish Federation's Max M. Fisher Building. The 5:30 p.m. wine and cheese reception will focus on the needs of the 1992 Cam- paign. Mr. Aronson will pro- vide a local update, and Sivan Maas, the community shlicha, will outline developments in Israel and new economic realities there with more than 350,000 Jewish refugees arriving from the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia and other countries. "Asset Protection" will be the theme of a presentation by attorney Jerry M. Ellis at a dessert reception of Jewish medical and health care pro- fessionals on behalf of the 1992 Allied Jewish Cam- paign 7:30 p.m. May 7 at the home of Drs. Phoebe and Har- ris Mainster. Dr. Conrad Giles, chairman of the Jewish Federation's Ex- ecutive Committee, also will address local needs in the Jewish community at the gathering, sponsored by the Medical Section of the Jewish Federation Young Adult Division. The event is open to any professional and spouse in- terested in learning more about the Jewish community, discussing current topics and networking within the community. Federation is sponsoring and coordinating the non- fund-raising trip with the cooperation of The Jewish News as well as with many organizations and congrega- tions throughout the state. The largest trip to Israel ever mounted in Michigan will cost $1,993 per person for the 10-day mission, April 18-28, 1993. Participants will fly directly from Detroit to Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion Airport. The trip will include deluxe hotel accommodations and sightseeing throughout Israel. Mission-goers may travel with their families, fraternal Holocaust Program Is Planned For Lansing The annual State of Michigan Official Holocaust Commemoration will be held noon on April 29 in the auditorium of the Michigan State Library and Museum in Lansing. This year's theme is "Take Two Suitcases . . . The Journey From Persecution To Freedom!' The commemora- tion will include participation from New Americans, who were also only permitted to bring two suitcases with them as they left the Soviet Union to begin new lives. Governor John Engler will speak A bus to the commemora- tion will leave from the Oak Park Jewish Community Center 10 a.m. that morning. Riders are asked to be at the Center at 9:30.
