How We Learn
From Philanthropy

PHILIP SLOMOVITZ

4".

Editor Emeritus

hilanthropy is often
judged among the
most dominant fac-
tors in life. It could well be
considered as an awareness
of such duty by all faiths and
all peoples. It could become a
major power in human rela-
tionships with a recognition
of the great deeds that are in
charitableness.
A concept defined by a
noted authority is applicable
here. Dr. Philip Birnbaum
provides this definition:

p

Stride Rite.® Super Series leather sneakers. Put them
through the washer, the dryer, even through a typical
playtime. They'll still look great. In fact, we guarantee
it: If they wear out before your child outgrows them,
you get another pair in the same size and style, free.

Involvement in important
causes doctrinally en-
courages studies of the
movement. This becomes
apparent from commitments
introduced in the Birnbaum
concepts. An unusual ap-
plication is provided in
Walden by poet-philosopher
Henry David Thoreau (1817-
1862). In his words:

Philanthropy is almost
the only virtue which is
sufficiently appreciated
by mankind.

The biblical term
tsedakah is often used
synonymously with
justice, truth, kindness,
ethical conduct, help and
deliverance. It is applied,
in post-biblical Hebrew,
specifically to the relief of
poverty as an act of
justice and moral behav-
ior. The word tsedakah,
designating any work
directed toward aiding
the poor, signifies that the
poor man's right to food,
clothing and shelter, is
considered by Judaism as
a legal claim which must
be honored by the more
fortunate.

This is a remarkable
definition and provides en-
thusiasm for causes. When
remarkable achievements
involve the saving of lives
and progress in medical
research, the interest grows
in immensity.
Bar-Ilan University
Detroit associates have
cause to be proud about
health protection revealed in
the following statement by
the university:

Bar-Ilan University in
Israel has licensed the
Ivax Corp. to produce a
new drug it discovered
that reduces toxicities
associated with
chemotherapy and radia-
tion used to treat cancer.
The drug was synthesiz-
ed by s Professor Michael

Albeck of Bar-Ilan's
chemistry department
and developed by Pro-
fessor Benjamin Sredni,
head of the Cancer, AIDS
and Immunology Resear-
ch Institute at Bar-flan.
The drug is currently
being tested on lung
cancer patients in Israel
and will son be tested on
patients in the United
States ...

The academic programs of
all Israel universities now
include emphases on Rus-
sian Jewish emigre
enrollments and this is a
new priority at Bar-Ilan. The
problems that have arisen
from the antagonisms cre-
ated not only 'by Arab en-
mities but also the pre-
judices in newspaper circles
have created needs to estab-
lish confrontations with the
media. It is, therefore, im-
portant to consider another
development at Bar-Ilan as
significant - that of its jour-
nalism-communications
cathedra.
Steps toward the ad-
vancement of this program
are now pursued by the Bar-
Ilan division of journalism
and public communication
under the chairmanship of
Dr. Sam Lehman-Wilzig. An
announcement has just been
revealed by Dr. Lehman-
Wilzig:

Permit me to say a few
things about the Division
and the communications
situation in Israel in
general. The country is
presently undergoing a
truly revolutionary change
in its media setup: cable
TV began in January 1991,
the Second Channel (com-
mercial) is already broad-
casting, and regional radio
stations are scheduled to
commence later in 1992.
As a result, other
"schools" of communica-
tions have popped up in
Israel, and the Division
finds itself in the unusual
situation of having to com-
pete for students. This is
healthy as far as I'm con-
cerned, but it does involve
the need to redirect our
energies. One of the ways
of doing that is to make our
program more attractive
through a journal and
periodic day seminars for
the general public.
The other direction in
which I have begun plann-
ing is to change the Divi-
sion, which at the moment
grants a certificate, into a

full-fledged department
granting a master's degree
in communications. At pre-
sent, only Hebrew Univer-
sity has such a degree, but
it is highly research
oriented; our approach is
to train journalism practi-
tioners, i.e. reporters and
public relations profes-
sionals. This is a large-
scale project and will in-
volve not only much work
but money as well.
As it is, our program
presently has 125 students
with a total budget this
year of only $200,000
(financed exclusively by
student tuition).

These programmatic
commitments are examples
of the academic aims leading
to notable achievements in
all Israel's universities. Col-
lectively, they validate the
definition of philanthropy by
Henry David Thoreau. ❑

S.A. Jews
Acknowledged

Johannesburg (JTA) —
African National Congress
President Nelson Mandela
has for the first time public-
ly acknowledged South
African Jewry's "particular-
ly outstanding contribution"
to his people's "struggle for
freedom and social justice."
His warm, unsolicited
message was conveyed by
fax to the editor of the

Johannesburg Jewish Voice,

the official newspaper of the
South African Jewish Board
of Deputies.
It was the first such com-
munication by the ANC
leader to the South African
Jewish community and was
described by the Jewish
Voice editor as "an incredi-
ble coup in black-Jewish re-
lations."
Mandela said in his mes-
sage that Passover, which
commemorates the eman-
cipation of the Israelites
from slavery, bears a mes-
sage of universal human
significance that has touch-
ed the hearts of millions
throughout history and
transcends boundaries of ge-
ography, race or creed.
He stressed that the ANC
recognized that despite its
small numbers relative to
the entire population, the
local Jewish community has
made contributions `second
to none."
