Next month, Ms. Kolbert
will return to her hometown
to receive an award from her
alma mater, Cranbrook-
Kingswood. In her first
public hometown ap-
pearance, she will speak for
Hadassah on "America At a
Crossroad: Roe vs. Wade
Before the Supreme Court"
7 p.m. May 3 at Temple
Beth El.
Ms. Kolbert will discuss
the Pennsylvania Abortion
Control Act, under which a
doctcir must give a woman
seeking an abortion • state-
published materials that
discuss fetal development,
and a woman must wait 24
hours after receiving the in-
formation before proceeding
with an abortion.
In addition, a married
woman in most cases must
obtain written permission
from her husband. Teens
under 18 must be counseled,
and can not obtain abortions
without permission of a
parent or a judge.

Jewish Family Service's
Sandra Jaffa and Denise
Alexander, of the state's
Department of Social Ser-
vices, have more in common
than either one realizes.
Each wants to make sure
Jewish victims of domestic
abuse have a safe place to
live in emergency situations.
Mrs. Jaffa, program man-
ager for the Family Abuse
Prevention Program, and
Ms. Alexander, executive di-
rector for the state's Do-
mestic Violence Prevention
and Treatment Division, re-
cently met to discuss their
respective jobs and goals.
JFS and the National
Council of Jewish Women
want to launch a privately
funded kosher shelter for
victims of domestic violence.
Ms. Alexander has question-
ed whether such a shelter is
necessary since the Haven in
Pontiac already shelters
Oakland County victims of
domestic abuse.
After their meeting, Ms.
Alexander realized she and
JFS-NCJW officials were on
the same wavelength. Their
mutual goal: a small shelter
that will house one family at
a time.
Organizers say they
believe many Jewish wo-
men, in need of these ser-
vices, do not use existing op-
tions. The apartment would
come complete with an
alarm system hooked in to a
police station.
Eventually, Ms. Alexander
said, such a shelter may
qualify for state funds. ❑
