Kolbert For Choice,
Aguda Files Brief
The Jewish community
was on both sides of the well-
publicized abortion rights
debate this week when the
U.S. Supreme Court heard
arguments over a Penn-
sylvania law that allows the
state to impose strict regula-
tions — but does not ban —
abortion.
Though Reform, Conser-
vative and secular Jewish
organizations have publicly
advocated a woman's right
to choose abortion, the Court
received a friend-of-the-court
brief from a leading Or-
thodox Jewish advocacy
group.
The Agudath Israel of
America has expressed op-
position to abortion on de-
mand.
On the other side, the
ACLU lead attorney on the
case, Kathryn Kolbert, is
Jewish and a native
Detroiter. She is considered
one of the nation's top legal
advocates for abortion
rights.
When the U.S. Supreme
Court rules before its
summer break on Planned
Parenthood vs. Casey, Ms.
Kolbert will be on record
defending her belief that the
state must not interfere with
