never thought she'd
be among the oldest
living graduates of a school.
But she is a member of
- Hillel Day School's first
graduating class —the Class
of '67.
Now her oldest daughter,
Francesca, will be the first
child of an alumna to
graduate from Hillel when
she joins commencement
ceremonies this June with
the Class of '92.
"I remember crying when I
walked through the halls,"
Mrs. Berg said. "We didn't
think the school could get
along without us."
Hillel got along just fine
after the original class of
about a dozen graduates
went on to high school. In
fact, this year the school has
an estimated enrollment of
600.
Now, , in celebrating the
25th anniversary of the first
graduating class, a group of
Hillel alumni are forming a
new fund-raising arm, which

will kick off June 17 with a
comedy performance by
Spike Manton of Chicago,
(who coincidentally is mar-
ried to a Hillel alumna.)
"Since Hillel was such a
major part in most of our
lives, we want to continue on
and have the alumni con-
tinue to network in their so-
cial and business lives," said
alumni committee co-
chairman and new Hillel
parent Lisa Mark Lis, a
graduate of the Class of '74
whose daughter, Ariella,
just started kindergarten.
In the past few years,
Hillel board members have
organized a few small reu-
nions. But this year, the
board sought help from
alumni, many with children
now attending Hillel.
"This (alumni) energy
seems to keep building,"
Mrs. Lis said.
There is a charge for the
event, which is open to all
alumni over age 21. Persons
with names and addresses of
alumni, or needing more in-
formation, can call Sandy
Kresch at Hillel's develop-

engineer and his wife,
a new American couple is
employed by Ford Motor Co.
Leonid Smargonsky,
trained as an automobile
engineer, is working in pro-
duct development. Marina
Smargonsky, a polymer
chemist, secured a job in the
company's plastics division.

They say they like their
jobs, and they know they
secured them the American
way: by making business
contacts through network-
ing.
"In America, you learn to
be extroverted, assertive, to
push yourself to be suc-
cessful," says Dr. Gerald
Cole, principal staff engi-
neer for Ford Motor Co.

introduced the couple to
many related professionals
after his wife, Vivian
Smargon, saw their picture
in a newspaper and thought
