ANC Article
Dispells Myths
Johannesburg (JTA) —
Myths generated by stereo-
types of Jews may have been
dispelled by an article in
Mayibuye, journal of Nelson
Mandela's predominantly
black African National Con-
gress.
The guest writer, Dr.
Franz Auerbach, described
the history, structure, ac-
tivities and aims of South
Africa's Jewish community.
Mr. Auerbach, an educator
who serves on the ANC's
Committee for the Repatria-
tion of Exiles, directs the
South African Jewish Board
of Deputies Outreach Pro-
gram.
He also heads Jews for So-
cial Justice, an anti-
apartheid group founded in
1985.
"Most members of the
Jewish community are will-
ing to make a worthwhile
contribution to the develop-
ment of democracy in South
Africa," Mr. Auerbach
wrote.
"Jewish South Africans
are mindful that building
the future will be a long pro-
cess in which all citizens
must be freed from the
disadvantages, ignorance
and prejudices of the past."
Mr. Auerbach and South
Africa's chief rabbi, Cyril
Harris, were organizers of a
widely publicized appeal by
religious leaders of all faiths
urging people to abandon
prejudices based on lang-
uage, color, gender, religion
or political opinion.
It was signed by Catholic,
Protestant and Moslem
spiritual leaders.
During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrtzeits of the following departed friends, with
the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mishnayos.
