Rocket Scientist
Tries To Clear Name
Toronto (JTA) — Arthur
Rudolph, the Nazi scientist
who helped develop the V-2
rocket and later the rocket
that sent American
astronauts to the moon,
wants to clear his name, if
not his conscience.
His lawyer, Barbara
Kulaszka, was in the Fed-
eral Court of Canada here
this week to appeal the
Canadian Immigration
Department's decision last
year to bar his admission to
the country on the grounds
that he is a suspected war
criminal.
Mr. Rudolph himself re-
mained in Hamburg, Ger-
many, where he has lived
since 1984 after cutting a
deal with the U.S. Justice
Department. Rather than
face prosecution by the
department's Office of Spe-
cial Investigations, he
agreed to depart the United
States permanently and to
relinquish the American

citizenship he obtained in
1954.
The OSI agreed not to con-
test continuation of his
American pension of $50,000
a per year.
Now 85 years old, Mr.
Rudolph wants to regain his
U.S. citizenship, claiming he
forfeited it under duress. His
arrival here without a visa
on a July 1, 1990, Lufthansa
flight from Germany was
part of a well-organized
campaign by Friends of Ar-
thur Rudolph, an organiza-
tion based in Huntsville,
Ala., where he worked at
NASA's Space Center.
His only daughter,
Marianne, 55, who is a
graphic artist for NASA in
San Jose, Calif., is also ac-
tive in the campaign.
Mr. Rudolph and Ms.
Kulaszka face stiff opposi-
tion from Crown Prosecutor
Charlotte Bell of the Cana-
dian Justice Department's
war crimes unit.

Television Unites
Kin In Mideast
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Through
the magic of electronics,
Israelis of Syrian origin
welcomed relatives and
friends whom they had not
seen in more than 40 years
into their living rooms last
week.
The segment on Israel
Television's primetime eve-
ning news broadcast March
4 showed glimpses of a hand-
ful of the 4,500 Jews who
live in Damascus, Aleppo
and Kamishli, and inter-
views with a few.
Footage for the Israeli
television program re-
portedly came from a Ger-
man television camera crew
working with the assistance
of the Syrian government.
The broadcast triggered
intense responses, especially
among Israelis who recog-
nized their kin — a brother,
an uncle, a cousin — all
grown so much older than
remembered.
Many in the television au-
dience recorded the program
on their VCRs and watched
the tape over and over again.
The broadcast included
interviews with Rabbi
Avraham Hamra, with the
neighborhood butcher, with
small-business owners, a
merchant, a 90-year-old man
and Rosette Matar, a
hospital worker.
All attested to an improv-
ed attitude toward the Jew-

ish community by the Syrian
regime.
They said there has been a
lessening of restrictions on
traveling abroad for medical
purposes or for meetings
with relatives. Ms. Matar
said she was permitted to go
to Switzerland for an opera-
tion.
A bar mitzvah ceremony at
the synagogue was shown,
conducted in Hebrew.
Roman Jew
Is Elected
Rome (JTA) — One of
Rome's leading Jewish
citizens was elected to
Parliament in the general
elections last week.
Enrico Modigliani, a 54-
year-old businessman, ran
on the Republican Party
ticket, one of the smaller of
Italy's political parties and
the only one that has been
consistently supportive of
Israel.
He has been active in Jew-
ish affairs since his youth
and is a committed Zionist,
of which he made no secret
in his election campaign.
Mr. Modigliani was a Zionist
youth movement leader and
is presently a senior member
of the Rome Jewish Com-
munity and the Federation
of Italian Jewish Com-
munities.
