A modern dance class at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy.
Music, Dance Academy
Fills Artistic Needs
LISA SAMIN
Special to The Jewish. News
F
rom the days when
King David played his
harp, composed
beautiful songs and danced
through the streets of
Jerusalem, music and dance
have been an integral part of
Jerusalem's timeless attrac-
tion. No better place is this
seen than at the prestigious
Jerusalem Rubin Academy of
Music and Dance. Walking
toward the Academy on the
Givat Ram campus of the
Hebrew University, strains of
classical, baroque, chamber
and Middle EaStern music
drift gracefully through the
windows, mingling to form a
medley of sounds which em-
brace campus students and
visitors.
"The artistic needs of
Israel, and the needs of
Israel's artists are both fulfill-
ed at the Academy," says
Academy Head Mendi Rodan,
himself an internationally
renowned conductor who im-
migrated to Israel 30 years
ago from Romania. "The
Rubin Academy is a unique
institution," says Public Rela-
tions Director Sharon Tabor-
Pintz. "Here Western and
Eastern culture meet in
music and dance, creating a
special feeling not found
anywhere else." And here, in
Israel's leading performing
arts academy, Israel's dancers
and musicians, students and
teachers, train intensively to
meet the high standards
demanded by the Academy.
Approximately 1,500
students study at the
Academy's three schools: the
Conservatory, the high school
and the academically ac-
credited higher-education-
level Academy. The Conser-
vatory provides pre-
professional after-school
training in music and dance
for children aged 5-18. Says
Director Esther Narkiss, "We
are not a community center
offering after-school classes
for children. The Conser-
vatory gives music and dance
lessons for children who are
more committed and more
serious about learning."
The Conservatory's chil-
dren's choir, "Ankor," is con-
sidered the best children's
