making to students in the
regional kibbutz high school.
"If a child makes his own
guitar, it will give him a
much better understanding of
music and how it is produc-
ed," he says. His course was so
successful that he utilized it
as the basis for his book, A

Guide to Building Stringed
Instruments.

Like Mr. Weis, his students
have used their imaginations
to create the guitar-banjos,
ukulele-mandolins and other
odd hybrids hanging in the
studio. "Many of the children
who built their own in-
struments have continued to
play," he says with obvious
pride.
Having a limited budget
has taught Mr. Weis to make
the most of little and his im-
agination has helped him
create unusual instruments
out of a variety of materials
discarded or donated — coffee
cans and ceramic plates, tor-
toise shells and gourds. Reluc-
tant to throw anything away,
his studio is crammed with
the raw materials of future
instruments.
He takes down a small lute,
telling how this particular in-
strument was found broken in
a garbage dump and brought
to him by a friend. Mr. Weis
caresses its round, inlaid bel-
ly and shows me where the
lute, actually an Arab oud,
had been broken and how he
repaired it:
He has also come across
unusual instruments, such as
a seven string Russian guitar
brought to him for repair.
"The man who brought it to
me wanted to give it to his
son as a gift but, fortunately
for me, the boy wanted a six
string guitar like his friends."
When an American
volunteer on the kibbutz
brought him a bass guitar to
fix, Mr. Weis tried it out and
decided he wanted one for
himself. Using the repaired
one as a model, he built his
own bass and the volunteer
began giving him lessons. Mr.
Weis now plays the instru-
ment in a jazz ensemble one
evening a week.
He also enjoys teaching
young children to make per-
cussion instruments out of
odds and ends they gather
from the dining hall, the kib-
butz machine shop and
carpentry shop. "Every
material has an inherent
sound," he states, and em-
phasizes his point by walking
through the studio with two
drumsticks tapping a
xylophone of broken pipes,
ashtray cymbals and a
triangle made from a number
six knitting needle. He taps a
cheerful melody on some
assorted cups and saucers. ❑
