LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .
April 15, 1949 ... "Best
Passover story had car dealer
Larry Israel and son Harvey,
in from University of Pitt-
sburgh, as the principal
characters . . . Both were
bringing Passover dishes
down from the attic . . . they
grabbed the heavy box and
began lugging it downstairs
. . . When halfway down,
Harvey asked pop to go a tri-
fle slower . . . Larry, however,
continued his steady pace,
remarking, 'What's the mat-
ter, college life too soft for
you?' . . . Harvey practically
pleaded with him to take it
easier . . . but was reminded
that he'd probably be in bet-
ter condition if he didn't run
around nights on the campus
. . . Finally unable to restrain
himself any longer, Harvey
yelled out . . . 'I'm having
enough trouble back here
dad, without having to listen
to any sermons. My belt
busted!' "
Sept. 25, 1970 ... Laura
Bessman instructed her new
housekeeper to always serve
from the left and take plates
from the right . . . The girl
replied, 'I won't forget,
ma'am, but what's the matter,
superstitious or some-
thing?' "
