ing of a friendship that
resulted in several White
House engagements stret-
ching into the Bush
administration.
"The evenings are always
more than pleasant at the
White House," he com-
mented. "Each occasion is
like a storybook kind of ex-
perience. The whole time I'm
there I'm trying to believe it's
really happening."
The former first lady has
kept in touch.
"I've spoken to Nancy on
the phone from time to time,"
he said. "I've been asked to
perform for different pro-
grams in honor of the
Reagans, none of which I've
been able to do for one reason
or another, but I have remain-
ed friendly with Mrs. Reagan,
whom I've always been fond
of and for whom I have a
great deal of empathy seeing
the way the public perceives
her and the way she's been
treated."
His European debut was in
1986, when he starred in Lon-
don at a celebration honoring
Prince Andrew and Sarah
Ferguson. In 1987, he toured
21 European cities with Liza
Minnelli.
Although he has not tra-
veled to Israel, he has been
the subject of an article in the
Israeli press.
"It's funny because some-
body sent me an article a cou-
ple of years ago in Hebrew
about a lady who was very in-
fluenced by my recordings,"
he reported. "It told how she
patterned her career after the
music I sing, and there was a
picture of me and a little side-
bar about me. A friend of
mine who reads Hebrew
translated it, and I was tick-
led to know people even knew
about me over there.
"Especially exciting for me
is performing for songwriters
and meeting some of the
great writers," he said.
"When I played for the first
time at the Algonquin in New
York, I had the thrill of
meeting many of the song-
writers whom I have admired.
They all came to see me, from
Stephen Sondheim to Leo-
nard Bernstein."
Calling himself a music
conservationist, he has car-
ried his interest in composers
to the recording studio,
devoting albums individually
to the Gershwins, Burton
Lane and most recently, Jule
Styne.
"The Jule Styne album is
part of a series I refer to as
living songbooks because
they feature each composer
playing the piano as I sing,"
he explained. "Jule has more
hit songs to his credit than
any living songwriter. He is
