Coral World:
Natural Attractions

RUTH ROVNER

Special to The Jewish News

I

nside the observatory,
visitors are gathered
around a tank, watching
varied sea creatures — red
snapper, trumpet fish, yellow-
tails — swimming under-
water.
As they watch, they also get
close-up views of coral fronds,
rock formations and swaying
sea fans.
The underwater obser-
vatory is part of Coral World
Marine Park, a hilltop site on
the island of St. Thomas in
the U.S. Virgin Islands. Here
tourists can visit the dome-
shaped observatory 20 feet
underwater for close-up views
usually enjoyed only by scuba
divers.
No wonder it's a top tourist
spot on the island, drawing
about 300,000 tourists a year.
Though it's situated on an
island in the Caribbean, it is
operated by an Israeli com-
pany and is a prime example
of the way Israeli ingenuity is
often transplanted success-
fully to far-flung places.
The original Coral World is
in Eilat, and it was opened in
1975 by Morris Kahn and
David Friedman, founders of
Coral World International.
Three years later, they open-
ed the second Coral World in
St. Thomas, and, more recent-
ly, a third in the Bahamas.
"It's a unique concept," says
Ariel Hirt, the general
manager of Coral World in St.
Thomas. "You need coral reef,
land, the right currents and
enough tourists to support it."
Mr. Kahn and Mr. Fried-
man first found that combina-
tion first in Eilat and then in
St. Thomas. But the St.
Thomas site presented entire-
ly new challenges. "There are
things here that don't exist in
the Red Sea," says Mr. Hirt,
who moved here from Eilat
with his wife and three
daughters to manage the new
site.
Shortly after he arrived, he
met a fellow Israeli living
nearby. It was the chief
technician of the island's
desalinization plant, which is
another Israeli project on the
island.
Mr. Hirt, who was born in
Poland and emigrated to
Israel as a youngster in 1951,
never expected to be living on
a Caribbean island. He was
managing the Moriah hotel
in Eilat so he was familiar
with Coral World there; and
when the chance came to
manage the new site in St.
Thomas, he eagerly accepted
the new challenge.
