Rabbi Peller speaks this
language fluently. Because
the Jewish community is so
influential, his role goes way
beyond that of pulpit rabbi.
He's also a diplomat of sorts,
who is often invited to official
island functions and to speak
regularly on the local televi-
sion program.
Besides the rabbi's in-
fluence, there are many
evidences of the Jewish
presence all over the island.
In the downtown shopping
area, many of the stores are
run by descendants of the
original settlers and the
Eastern European Jews who
came in the 1920s.
For example, the interna-
tional jewelry establishment
Spritzer and Furhman
originated when two im-
migrants, one from Hungary
and one from Poland, met on
the boat coming over to
Curacao. Both were jewelers.
When they arrived on the
island, they started a partner-
ship, selling their wares
house-to-house, quite a con-
trast to the extensive interna-
tional business which evolved
from those beginnings.

The waterfront street where
boats for the Floating Market
are docked is called I.H.
Capriles Kade, named for the
Jewish founder of the Maduro
and Curiel Bank, largest in
the Netherlands Antilles.

While they are fully a part
of island life, Curacao's Jews
also maintain an active
Jewish community. One way
to see that is not only to visit
Mikve Israel on tour, but to
attend a Shabbat service and
meet the congregants.
On Friday night, the sanc-
tuary is beautifully lit with
antique candlelabra. The rab-
bi is attired in full, flowing
black vestments. He recites
the prayers in English and
Hebrew and one prayer, the
blessing for the monarchy in
Holland, is in Portuguese, just
as Jews have been reciting
since they first starting
holding services on this
island in 1654.
"This is a vibrant congrega-
tion with a long history," says
the rabbi, relaxing at the kid-
dush that always follows Fri-
day evening service.
"Everyone here feels a very
deep emotional attachment to
Judaism." CI
