I BUSINESS 1 SPRING COLORS OF BENETTON. Israeli Immigrants Create New Products Rehovot, Israel — When electro-optics expert Dr. Vladimir Vorobeichik arrived in Israel, it didn't take him long to find a job — as a porter. But the Russian im- migrant, who used to head a large research group in Len- ingrad (St. Petersburg), is now working in his field again, thanks to a new program set up at Kiryat Weizmann, a science-based industrial park near the Weizmann Institute. Dr. Vorobeichik and his four-member team are the brains behind the first project of the "technological in- cubator" company, located in the Kiryat Weizmann in- dustrial park, Nes Ziona. The project, which was formed in partnership with El-Op, a Kiryat Weizmann electro- optics firm, will be one of 10 companies to be established in the framework of the "in- cubator." All are intended to tap the know-how of im- migrant scientists in order to create new products, technologies and jobs. The program, called the In- cubator for Technological En- trepreneurship — Kiryat Weizmann, was launched by the Yeda Research and Development Co. Ltd., in col- laboration with Africa-Israel Investments Ltd., which operates the park. The Weiz- mann Institute was one of the initiators of the idea. "Our goal is to choose the immigrant scientists with the most promising proposals, and provide them with enough support to bring their projects to a stage where they will attract outside interest and markets," explains Dr. Shmuel Yerushalmi, general manager of the Incubator for Technological Entrepre- neurship and a former member of the Weizmann In- stitute's Electronics Depart- ment. Dr. Vorobeichik's proposal was recommended by El-Op after a technical and marketing review and was selected from among 200 other submissions by a com- mittee made up of Weizmann Institute scientists, in- dustrialists and members of Africa-Israel Investments Ltd. The optical device he is developing should have a large market. Before 1989 Dr. Vorobeichik headed an electro-optic research group at Leningrad's Optico Mechanical Organiza- tion (LOMO), a respected in- stitute of 22,000. Some 15 members of his group have since immigrated to Israel. Four have now joined him at Kiryat Weizmann.
