New York (JTA) — When
Hadassah signed a friend of
the court brief last month
urging the U.S. Supreme
Court to find unconstitu-
tional the Pennsylvania law
which effectively nullifies
Roe vs. Wade, the organiza-
tion took an historic step.
The case involving a
woman's right to an abortion
marked the first time the 80-
year-old women's organiza-
tion ever signed an amicus
brief.
Coming as it did in such a
highly controversial and
public case, the brief aptly il-
lustrates Hadassah's shift
into a new era. In an effort to
attract younger, professional
women, the organization is
shedding its low-key ap-
proach and moving ag-
gressively to tackle the
kinds of issues — from abor-
tion to professional network-
ing — that matter most to
these women.
Hadassah has long ad-
vocated a woman's right to
make a private decision
about abortion. For four
years it has co- sponsored the
annual "March for Women's
Lives"— which this year
took place on April 5 in
Washington, D.C. — along
with the National Organiza-
tion for Women and dozens
of other women's rights
groups.
But the 385,000-member
Hadassah — which bills
itself as the largest Jewish
membership organization in
the world — has remained
largely muted on domestic
issues.
Now, in an effort to update
its image and attract more of
the women who will lead the
organization into the next
century, Hadassah is aiming
for public, political savvy.
According to Hadassah
National President Deborah
Kaplan, members' ages run
the gamut, from 20 to 90,
with the average being
about 45.
These younger women are
interested in domestic
issues. So to shore up its
American Affairs Depart-
ment, Hadassah recently
created a professional staff
position.
Hadassah's emphasis on
the leadership of women is
particularly appealing to
women with children who
drop out of the job market, at
least temporarily, and spend
time on communal work.
Hadassah also hopes to br-
ing in more young women by
keeping them in the organ-
ization once they graduate
from one of its youth pro-
grams, Young Judaea and
HaMagshimim.
Resignation
Is Withdrawn
Jerusalem (JTA) — David
Levy, having scored a stunn-
ing victory in a political
poker game with Prime Min-
ister Yitzhak Shamir,
withdrew his resignation,
only hours before he was to
have submitted it to the
Cabinet.
At a triumphant news con-
ference, he read out the long
list of concessions Mr.
Shamir had made in order to
keep Mr. Levy and his fac-
tion firmly within the Likud
camp.
Political observers ques-
tioned, however, whether
Likud's internal political
crisis is indeed over.
