Tel Aviv (JTA) — China,
which last month estab-
lished full diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel, is prepar-
ing for the inauguration of
direct air service between
Tel Aviv and Beijing by
Israel's national air carrier,
El Al, Israel Radio reported
this week.
The news was conveyed in
a telephone interview with
Isi Leibler of Australia, co-
chairman of the World Jew-
ish Congress, who was
speaking from Beijing.
Mr. Leibler, who owns a
large travel business, had
just had an hour-long
meeting with Yung Yu Lin,
director general of the
Chinese Civil Aviation
Corp., at which they discuss-
ed tourism.
Mr. Leibler said Yung told
him he was ready to meet
with a delegation from
Israel's Civil Aviation Au-
thority to discuss direct
charter flights by El Al from
Tel Aviv, to begin in about
three months.
The Chinese official
thought regularly scheduled
fights could start in about
nine months, Mr. Leibler
said. He quoted Yung as say-
ing, "We will do everything
possible to cut through all
the normal obstacles and
settle this matter very
quickly."
The Chinese do not plan to
operate an air service to
Israel by their own airline at
present.
"I do not think that, at this
stage of the game, there are
enough Chinese who can
travel abroad to warrant
their airline operating a ser-
vice to Israel," Mr. Leibler
explained.
When Israeli Foreign Min-
ister David Levy visited Bei-
jing last month, reports ap-
peared that direct charter
flights from Tel Aviv would
be restricted to non-Israeli
tourists.
But no such limitation was
mentioned in Mr. Leibler's
talk with Yung. Once direct
flights begin, the Chinese
are expected to receive in-
dividual tourists from Israel
as well as tour groups of
Israeli passport-holders.
