added. "In fact, I like
Michael. I respect his talent.
Intellectually, he's not a par-
ticularly good role model, but
he's intelligent and per-
sonable, bright and likeable.
He's basically a good guy."
Smith, a native of
Brooklyn, N.Y., says he
doesn't think less of Jordan
despite his angry reaction to
the book before it came out.
Jordan said he will never
read the book and does not
talk with Smith in interview
situations. Smith is covering
the Bulls on a part-time basis
this season.
"I thought the book was un-
fair because someone was dig-
ging for dirt, trying to make
a profit from the situation,"
Jordan told the Scripps
Howard News Service.
"Knowing we were cham-
pions, it was a great time to
do that kind of book. But I
think it was an unfair pay-
ment for what we achieved."
The Jordan Rules was
praised in most circles after
its release. It spent several
weeks on the New York
Times' best-seller list late in
1991.
Reviewer Alexander Wolff
of Sports Illustrated said he
now has more respect for Jor-
dan because, "beyond the pull
of his puppeteers, he is re-
vealed (in the book) as being
human."

Ironically, Smith almost did
not write the book, his first.
Following the 1989-90 season,
which saw the Bulls lose in
seven games to the eventual
NBA champion Detroit
Pistons in the Eastern Con-
ference finals, Smith thought
about asking to leave the
Bulls' beat after two years of
following the team.
Tired of the travel, which
kept him away from his wife
Kathleen and son Connor
(now 3), he considered re-
questing a reassignment.
But his editors at the
Tribune, convinced that the
Bulls could win it all in
1990-91 and knowing that
Smith possessed unequaled
access to the club's manage-
ment, players and coaches,
asked Smith to stick with the
team and write a book.
Selling the book's proposal
to a publisher was not easy,
but Smith finally signed with
Simon and Schuster in New
York.
Smith, who has been at the
Tribune since 1979 and in the
sports department since 1984,
wouldn't be surprised if the
Bulls captured the NBA
crown again this season.
Even though every opponent
is gunning for them, the Bulls
have the best record in the
league.
"There isn't so much built-
in tension this year," Smith
said. El
